Ubuntu MATE is a free and open-source Linux distribution and can be used on a wide variety of PowerPC based computers such as AmigaOne computers. Ubuntu MATE is an official derivative of Ubuntu. Its main differentiation from Ubuntu is that it uses the MATE desktop environment as its default user interface, based on GNOME 2 which was used for Ubuntu versions prior to 11.04, instead of the Unity graphical shell that is the default user interface for the Ubuntu desktop. Like previous LTS series’, 16.04.5 includes hardware enablement stacks for use on newer hardware. This support is offered on all architectures except for 32-bit PowerPC. “AmigaOne X5000 and X1000 users can get the 4.18 and 4.17 Linux kernels and the Mesa version 18.1.2 for Ubuntu 32-bit powerpc. That means we have also the new hardware enablement stack.” said Christian Zigotzky.
