Retro gaming hits the road: Atari classics now playable in Volkswagen cars

Atari and AirConsole are joining forces to bring updated versions of classic arcade games to Volkswagen vehicles. Volkswagen Drivers can now play Asteroids: Recharged and Breakout: Recharged directly from their car’s infotainment system. These games are part of a growing selection available on AirConsole’s platform, which also offers various sports, party, and racing games. The partnership will continue, as Missile Command: Recharged is expected to be added soon, although a specific release date has not been announced yet. This effort is part of a larger trend in the automotive industry to include gaming experiences in vehicles. Car companies like BMW, Audi, and Tesla have made similar advancements in recent years, trying to make car trips more enjoyable for passengers, especially during long drives, without distracting the driver. To play these games, Volkswagen owners need an active VW Connect Plus subscription and a smartphone with internet access. Passengers must download the AirConsole app from Volkswagen’s In-Car Shop, open it through the infotainment system, and scan the on-screen QR code to turn their smartphone into a game controller.
