From pixels to Prime: Amazon adapting Wolfenstein for TV

Amazon MGM Studios is officially developing a live-action TV series based on the iconic Wolfenstein video game franchise, according to Variety. The series will be done by Patrick Somerville, best known as the showrunner of Station Eleven and a writer/producer on The Leftovers. The Wolfenstein franchise has a great legacy in the gaming industry, the 1992’s Wolfenstein 3D, developed by id Software, revolutionized video games as a whole. Widely regarded as one of the first first-person shooters, Wolfenstein 3D placed players in the boots of William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, an American spy infiltrating Nazi strongholds during World War II. The franchise saw multiple reboots and iterations throughout the years, including Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001) and Wolfenstein (2009), each introducing new technology and deeper narrative layers. In 2014, developer MachineGames reimagined the series with Wolfenstein: The New Order, an alternate history shooter set in the 1960s, in a world where the Nazis have won World War II. This modern take gave the series new life with a rich storyline, cinematic production values, and much more. The reboot spawned several sequels and spin-offs, including The New Colossus, Youngblood, and The Old Blood, expanding the universe and deepening the lore around Blazkowicz and his descendants. Wolfenstein now joins a growing lineup of game-to-screen adaptations at Amazon, following the success of the Fallout series and alongside upcoming adaptations of Mass Effect, God of War, and Warhammer 40,000.
