Heretic and Hexen, two cult-classic first-person shooters that helped shape the dark fantasy subgenre, are making a grand return to PC and consoles. First released in the mid-‘90s—Heretic in 1994, followed by Hexen: Beyond Heretic in 1995. Their unique blend of sorcery, sinister foes, and atmospheric world-building instantly set them apart from other shooters of their time. Now, almost thirty years after original launch, Nightdive Studios and id Software have teamed up to bring Heretic and Hexen back in newly remastered “ultimate” editions. The collection doesn’t just offer a visual and technical overhaul; it’s a treasure trove of both nostalgic content and all-new adventures. Along with Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and the Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel expansion, this release introduces two brand-new episodes—Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur. With a staggering 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch arenas. Multiplayer has received a true 21st-century facelift as well: online cross-platform deathmatch and co-op for up to sixteen players, plus local split-screen modes—supporting up to four on consoles and eight on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
