Final Formation: City Connection revives a classic shooter with modern flair

City Connection and Happy Meal are set to revive the classic 1984 arcade shooter Formation-Z with their upcoming game Final Formation. The Steam page for the game, which includes Japanese and English language support—covering in-game comics and other texts—is now live for wishlisting. Final Formation puts players in control of a high-speed fighter aircraft capable of fusing with other units on the battlefield to create a variety of tactical combinations. Each stage offers freely explorable horizontal maps, giving players the freedom to approach objectives in multiple ways. The story unfolds in the year 3005, where humanity faces evolved mechanical foes called Termination Bots, and Earth’s forces deploy the transformable combat mecha EX-PELL alongside the AI-equipped autonomous unit PELL to confront this threat. The game introduces new free-scrolling stages reminiscent of classics like Defender and Fantasy Zone, allowing players to freely travel left or right during missions. It also features cutscenes illustrated by mangaka U-Watari, who worked on Final Exerion, and a soundtrack composed by Daisuke Matsumoto, notable for his work at City Connection and former CAVE projects. Early footage is available on X, Final Formation is without doubt expected to capture the essence of the 1980s classic while expanding it with modern gameplay elements and narrative depth, marking it as a highly anticipated release for fans of retro shooters.
