Animal rights organization PETA has formally requested that Nintendo remove the brass nose ring from the cow character featured in the recently launched Mario Kart World, a flagship title for the Nintendo Switch 2 console. The character, known simply as “Cow,” has rapidly gained popularity among the game’s players for its distinctive and whimsical design. In an open letter addressed to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, Joel Bartlett, PETA’s Senior Vice President of Marketing Engagement, expressed concern that the nose ring symbolizes animal suffering and exploitation within the meat and dairy industries. Bartlett emphasized that in real life, nose rings are forcibly placed in sensitive areas of cattle, causing pain and distress to the animals. The presence of the nose ring in a family-friendly game, PETA argues, undermines empathy for beef cattle welfare and normalizes practices tied to animal cruelty. PETA has further mobilized support through its youth-oriented Peta2 platform, encouraging the community to advocate for the design modification. While Nintendo has not yet publicly responded, this request highlights the increasing critical observation placed on entertainment companies regarding the ethical implications of their creative content.
