Pete Parsons retires as Bungie CEO amid studio challenges

Pete Parsons, a veteran of the gaming industry and longtime Bungie CEO, has announced he is stepping down as CEO after nearly 20 years with the studio. Parsons has been a key figure at Bungie since the Halo days, overseeing major milestones including the transition to Destiny and its sequel, as well as the studio’s $3.6 billion acquisition by Sony in 2022. In an emotional farewell message posted on Bungie’s official site, Parsons said it was time to “pass the torch” after two decades of building the company, founding the Bungie Foundation, and fostering a passionate community of players. He expressed pride in the worlds created and gratitude for the opportunity to work with the talented team at Bungie. Justin Truman, a Bungie veteran who has been involved with Destiny since its beginning, will take over as CEO. Truman has served in various roles including engineer, designer, and producer, and most recently was responsible for talent strategy and leading the Marathon project. He is committed to reconnecting with the community and reigniting the passion around Bungie’s games. Parsons’ departure comes amid a challenging period for Bungie, marked by layoffs, criticism over Destiny 2’s quality, and a mixed reception to the upcoming Marathon game. With Truman at the helm, Bungie enters a new chapter focused on rebuilding trust with its players and navigating an uncertain future.
