A major step forward for Amiga developers has arrived: a pre-release version of Qt 6.2.0 for AmigaOS 4.1 is now available, complete with OpenGLES2 support. The project, known as amiga-qt6, brings a state-of-the-art C++ class library to the platform, helping modernize software development for AmigaOne PowerPC systems. For the first time, AmigaOS 4.1 users gain access to a native build of Qt 6 — the same toolkit used for applications across Windows, Linux, and macOS. Developers can download pre-built versions directly from GitHub and immediately begin experimenting with or porting Qt-based graphical applications without needing to compile everything from scratch. The integration of OpenGLES2 is particularly exciting. It enables hardware‑accelerated graphics rendering, which means smoother animations, faster drawing, and more visually sophisticated user interfaces. Applications no longer rely solely on CPU-based rendering, unleashing more of the Amiga’s graphics hardware potential. In practice, this could translate into richer visuals and a more dynamic user experience across modern Amiga setups — especially for creative tools, visualizers, and GUI-intensive utilities. Qt 6 for AmigaOS 4 is licensed under the LGPLv3, allowing developers to use and adapt it freely under open source terms. The complete source code is available on GitHub, inviting collaboration and optimization from Amiga enthusiasts worldwide. Pre-built binaries are already available, letting developers jump right in to test, debug, and shape the environment for broader use. It’s both a technical milestone and a call to action for the Amiga community to take part in modernizing its beloved platform.
