The Genesis Project Team is delivering a dazzling upgrade to Sabre Wulf, the 1984 cult classic from Ultimate Play the Game, turning the Commodore 64 version into a vibrant showcase of the platform’s untapped power. In this iconic adventure, players control Sabreman, a daring explorer navigating a sprawling 256-screen jungle maze filled with traps, guardians, and hidden treasures stolen by a ferocious blue wolf. Originally released across ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, Amstrad CPC, and C64, it captivated with its non-linear exploration, atmospheric peril, and quest to collect the Amulet of Lamelot while battling iconic foes like the Marsh Hopper and Drune. Jon Eggleton’s pixel artistry infuses the jungle with multi-color tilesets and a sharper 320×200 resolution—surpassing the original 256×176—for colors that leap off the screen, fixing the dull ZX Spectrum-inspired palette of the first C64 port. Robert Troughton’s code rewrite ensures buttery-smooth movement, higher refresh rates, and bug-free screen transitions, while Marcin Majdzik’s soundtrack, new cinematics, and loading screens add polish. Enhancements like a fog-of-war map, intuitive UI, and diverse enemies make every treasure hunt more immersive and replayable. Version 0.5 preview is available for download, with the project nearing completion but no exact release date announced yet.
