Section Z returns: new Amiga version of the Capcom arcade shooter in development

Retro gaming has always been about more than just old graphics and high scores. For many players, it is about memories — the glow of a monitor in a dark room, the sound of disks loading, and the excitement of discovering a new game world for the first time. Every so often, those memories return in the form of new projects created by passionate developers who want to keep the spirit of classic gaming alive. One of the latest examples comes from developer AcidBottle, who is currently working on an Amiga conversion of the classic 1985 arcade shooter Section Z.

Originally released by Capcom, Section Z stood out from many other shooters of its era. Instead of simply moving from left to right, players explored a huge space station divided into sectors identified by letters and numbers. As players guided their armored astronaut through the station, they encountered branching paths, dangerous enemies, and a maze-like structure that made the game feel more like an exploration mission than a typical arcade shooter. Each door opened the possibility of a different route, giving the game a unique sense of discovery that many players still remember today. Now, decades after its arcade debut, Section Z is being brought to the Commodore Amiga by AcidBottle, a developer known in the retro community for impressive Amiga projects and conversions. (Fast food 2, Wonderboy, etc…) The goal of the project is not simply to recreate the game, but to capture the atmosphere and gameplay that made the original so memorable. Using the Scorpion Engine, a powerful development framework that has become popular in the Amiga homebrew scene, the developer is able to build a version that stays faithful to the original while taking advantage of modern development tools.

The game is being designed to run on classic OCS Amiga systems, although better performance can be expected on machines equipped with a faster 68020 processor and additional fast RAM. Even so, the project aims to remain accessible to owners of older hardware, ensuring that as many Amiga enthusiasts as possible can experience the game on the machines they love. At the moment, development is around fifty percent complete. Core gameplay systems are already working, and parts of the game’s map structure have been implemented. The remaining work involves finishing additional levels, refining gameplay elements, and polishing the overall experience. According to the developer, players will not have to wait too long to see the project in action, as a playable demo is expected to be released in the near future.

Projects like this highlight the enduring passion of the Amiga and retro gaming communities. Long after the commercial era of these machines has passed, developers and fans continue to create new experiences for classic hardware. For many enthusiasts, it is not just about nostalgia, but about preserving and celebrating a unique period in gaming history. With the upcoming Amiga version of Section Z, players may soon have the chance to step back into the corridors of that mysterious space station once again. And for those who grew up with the sounds and sights of classic arcade shooters, that journey will feel like returning to an old friend.
