Retro gaming fans, mark your calendars: R-Type Delta, the iconic 1998 PlayStation shooter, is making its grand return as R-Type Delta: HD Boosted. Slated for a Japanese release on November 20, 2025, this enhanced edition will land on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam). While global release details remain unconfirmed, excitement is already sky-high for this HD revival. For nostalgists, there’s a toggle to switch back to the original 1998 graphics, seamlessly blending modern and retro design. The game also boasts a freshly arranged soundtrack, with contributions from series composer Masahiko Ishida (R-Type II, Image Fight), USP (R-Type Delta), and Chris Hülsbeck (R-Type for C64 and Amiga) R-Type Delta: HD Boosted offers a significant graphical upgrade over the original 1998 PlayStation release. The 2025 version features high-resolution visuals with much sharper polygonal edges, making environments, ships, and effects substantially clearer and more detailed. Animations now run at a smooth 60fps, providing a more modern and visually engaging experience. The R-Type series is one of the best franchises in the shoot-’em-up (shmup) genre, known for its challenging gameplay, unique “Force” system, and dark sci-fi aesthetic. The series first appeared in arcades in 1987 and has since expanded to various sequels, spin-offs, and platforms. While the arcade version boasted more colors and greater graphical detail, the Commodore Amiga version was praised for its smooth scrolling, engaging soundtrack, and faithful level design, despite having a reduced color palette and some simplified backgrounds compared to the original.
