AmigaGPT 2.8.1 Released: Integrating latest OpenAI models and image generation on AmigaOS

Developed by Cameron Armstrong, AmigaGPT is a client application that brings OpenAI’s language models and DALL-E image generation to AmigaOS 3.x, 4.1, and MorphOS systems. With AmigaGPT, users can perform text generation, question answering, and creative tasks by connecting to models such as o1, GPT-4o, GPT-4, and GPT-3.5. The software also supports generating images through both DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3, allowing users to view and save images. AmigaGPT does not emulate modern AI functions directly on legacy Amiga hardware. Instead, it acts as a client interface running on AmigaOS 3.x, 4.1, or MorphOS that connects to OpenAI’s servers via the internet. The actual AI processing—including natural language generation by models such as o1, GPT-4o, GPT-4, and GPT-3.5, and image creation by DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3—occurs remotely on OpenAI’s cloud infrastructure. On the Amiga side, AmigaGPT manages user input, displays text and images, and handles speech synthesis by leveraging Amiga’s native capabilities or supported sound devices. It is programmed in C, utilizing the MUI graphical framework and various system libraries to parse JSON data exchanged with the OpenAI API. ARexx scripting support enables automation and external control. This approach bypasses the limited computer power of Amiga hardware by offloading the demanding AI workloads to modern servers while maintaining a native, responsive interface on the Amiga itself. The user interface uses the MUI framework and offers customizable options for fonts, colors, and screen handling. AmigaGPT integrates with system speech synthesis: on AmigaOS 3 and AmigaOS 4.1, additionally, OpenAI’s speech output can be enabled when AHI is installed. ARexx support is also included, allowing programmatic control of features such as sending prompts, generating images, and using speech synthesis through scripts or external applications. System requirements include a classic Amiga (Motorola 68020 or higher CPU) or a PowerPC-based machine for MorphOS or AmigaOS 4.1.
