In 1986, Sega released Out Run, a revolutionary racing game that quickly became a classic. With its vibrant graphics, iconic music, and fast-paced racing, it set the benchmark for arcade racers. Now, more than 30 years later, an impressive development has taken place: a programmer known as Reassembler has created a completely new and enhanced version of Out Run specifically for the Commodore Amiga. It is a fully rewritten version in assembly code, using the original 68000 assembly from the arcade game itself. The aim was to correct the flawed old Amiga versions of Out Run and deliver an experience nearly identical to the original arcade version. The game runs on mid-range Amigas equipped with a 68030 processor at a minimum of 50 MHz, an AGA chipset, 2 MB chip RAM, and 8 MB fast RAM. While it also works on faster setups, it’s remarkable that it can run so well at these specifications. Players will need the original arcade ROMs for the graphics and sound, which are not included in the release. Recently, the developer released an update that improves performance, adds support for CD32 hardware, and included extra settings. Since launch, the game has been downloaded over 4,000 times, demonstrating its popularity. Whether you’re nostalgic or simply a fan of quality racing games, this is a remarkable achievement that finally gives the Amiga the Out Run it deserves. It captures the original arcade magic on a retro platform in the way fans have long hoped for—a superb remake that preserves the original atmosphere, music, and gameplay while showcasing impressive technical work for Amiga hardware.
