War Thunder adds infantry combat in upcoming update

War Thunder introduces infantry combat through the “Line of Contact” update, blending it with vehicles and aircraft for large-scale battles. Testing started in December 2025 with a closed beta across Windows, Linux, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Players control a single soldier while commanding an entire AI squad that follows and assists automatically. Squad members can be assigned to positions like snipers for cover or assault troops for defenses with simple clicks. Weapons include modern arms such as M4A1, AK-74, M249, and SVD rifles, equipped with sights, grenade launchers, and bipods. The Granitograd map in Eastern Europe mixes infantry, ground vehicles, and aircraft with multi-level buildings and cover. Domination mode focuses on capturing points like a motor pool, school, and mall, where tanks like M1 Abrams and T-72B support but struggle in close quarters. Resupply crates provide ammo and explosives inside buildings. Preset US and Russian squads feature in the closed beta, with helicopters like AH-64A available in Realistic Battles. Arcade mode allows air battles after kills using unguided weapons. Full rollout is planned for 2026 after staged testing.
