Cyberpunk 2077 sequel slated for 2030 amid multiplayer push

CD Projekt Red’s development of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel has accelerated in 2025, but a new emphasis on multiplayer features is pushing back the release to Q4 2030. This timeline aligns with the original game’s tenth anniversary and follows earlier warnings of a 2030-2031 window. The project currently employs 135 staff members, with plans to double that over the next two years as the budget expands. A report from Polish investment firm Noble Securities highlights how multiplayer integration has extended production beyond the “benchmark W4” milestone. This shift marks a departure from the studio’s traditional single-player focus, seen in hits like The Witcher 3. Fans debate if day-one multiplayer justifies the delay, especially after Cyberpunk 2077’s rocky launch redeemed by strong single-player updates. Popular mods like CyberMP already offer unofficial PvP, filling a gap CD Projekt Red once considered but shelved for the original. Job listings confirm hiring for network engineers to build high-performance online experiences, hinting at features like matchmaking and low-latency servers. The sequel promises a deep story, enhanced NPC and enemy AI, and potential microtransactions for revenue. Keanu Reeves has expressed interest in reprising Johnny Silverhand. Using Unreal Engine 5, the team aims to innovate gameplay while streamlining development.
