Over 100 lost Sega Genesis ROMs recovered by VGHF

The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) recovered 144 ROMs from the Sega Channel service, which operated from 1994 to 1998 and delivered Sega Genesis content via cable television. Back in the mid-’90s, Sega Channel revolutionized gaming by piping full Genesis titles, demos, exclusives, and pro tips directly to your console through cable TV. When it vanished in 1998, no physical copies remained, turning most of its library into elusive legends—until now. It all came together through grit and teamwork: “Sega Channel Guy” scored rare tape backups from former staff, while VGHF linked up with ex-vice president Michael Shorrock at the Game Developers Expo for priceless docs. After two intense years, they digitized nearly 100 unique menu ROMs plus a treasure trove of game data. Recovered assets included exclusives Garfield: Caught in the Act – The Lost Levels and The Flintstones, adapted from canceled projects; truncated Genesis titles; and unreleased prototypes Shadows of the Wind and Popeye in High Seas High-Jinks.
