Retro game porter Infidelity has unveiled a fully playable beta of Contra Force for Super Nintendo, breathing new life into the controversial 1992 NES title. Originally conceived as Arc Hound for Japan’s Famicom, the game faced cancellation before Konami repurposed it as a Contra entry for North America, shifting from sci-fi run-and-gun to tactical urban combat. Contra Force diverged sharply from series staples like Contra and Super C, introducing top-down strategy over relentless action, which cooled fan enthusiasm amid NES hardware limits. Infidelity, celebrated for SNES conversions of Life Force and Gradius, preserves this outlier while leveraging 16-bit enhancements like smoother performance and pending BRR audio upgrades from original DPCM samples. The beta runs flawlessly from start to finish on authentic SNES gear or emulators, banishing NES-era slowdowns and refining controls for modern play. Announced via X (formerly Twitter), it invites retro enthusiasts to explore this “what if” scenario beside icons like Contra III: The Alien Wars.
