U.S. Championship V’Ball hits Amiga: JOTD delivers AGA and ECS ports

JOTD has released a near-final Amiga conversion of the 1988 arcade beach volleyball classic U.S. Championship V’Ball, supporting both ECS and AGA hardware. This homebrew project follows his recent Arcade-to-Amiga port of Lock ‘n’ Chase, showcasing impressive reverse-engineering skills. Technōs Japan developed U.S. Championship V’Ball for arcades, where players control beach bums George and Michael chasing a $2,500,000 tournament prize across stages like Daytona Beach, New York, Los Angeles, and Hawaii. Controls feature an eight-way joystick with jump and receive buttons for moves like power spiking, blocking, and diving; single-player mode handles both teammates, while multiplayer supports up to four players in versus or co-op. The game later ported to NES as Super Spike V’Ball and X68000, with variations in team selection and tournament structures. The Amiga version runs at a smooth 25 FPS on both ECS and AGA systems, available in three variants: ECS, AGA 64 colors, and AGA 128 colors. It requires a hard drive, WHDLoad, and fast memory to run, making it accessible for modern Amiga setups. Recent betas highlight ongoing refinements, with community excitement over the inclusive ECS support.
