Free RTS ‘Combined Arms’ unites C&C universes with major new update

A major new version of Combined Arms, a free standalone RTS built on the OpenRA engine, has landed and it is effectively a dream project for classic Command & Conquer fans, merging the Tiberium and Red Alert timelines into a single, cohesive war theater. The latest release, version 1.08, significantly expands the game with new campaign content, co‑op options, and technical upgrades, reinforcing its status as one of the most ambitious fan creations in the RTS space. Combined Arms is a fully standalone RTS, not a simple mod, even though it borrows heavily from units, structures, and aesthetics from the original Command & Conquer and Red Alert games. It runs on the fan‑made OpenRA engine, which means modern conveniences such as improved graphics, widescreen support, and robust online multiplayer are baked in without needing the original titles installed. The real magic lies in how the four factions are made to coexist. From the Tiberium side come GDI, with their lumbering armor and superior firepower, and NOD, masters of stealth, hit‑and‑run tactics, and asymmetrical warfare. From the Red Alert line arrive the Allies, leaning on mobility and high tech, and the Soviets, who embody brute force through heavy armor and overwhelming frontal assaults. On paper, it sounds like chaos—Mammoth Tanks trading blows with Tesla‑charged Soviet hardware in the same match—but under the hood the unit stats and tech trees have been re‑worked so that no single side simply steamrolls the others. The result is a sandbox where bizarre “what if” matchups feel surprisingly natural.
