Quake 3: Arena RTX remix path tracing mod unleashes stunning visuals

Modder ‘woodboy90’ has released the first version of an RTX Remix Path Tracing Mod for Quake 3: Arena, bringing real-time path tracing to this iconic multiplayer shooter. The mod currently remasters three classic maps—Q3DM1, Q3DM6, and Q3DM10—with modern PBR-style textures and ray-tracing compatible materials that enhance lighting, reflections, and shadows. This initial release focuses on visual upgrades while preserving the original fast-paced gameplay. Surfaces now react realistically to light, with rocket explosions creating radiant pools and dynamic shadows following players. Textures have been rebuilt using tools like imgupscaler.ai and Photopea to retain Quake 3’s gritty aesthetic alongside cutting-edge effects. Woodboy90 aims to remaster all remaining maps, introduce high-quality 3D player and object models, and overhaul UI/HUD textures. NVIDIA’s GeForce evangelist Jacob Freeman has showcased the mod on X, praising its path-traced revival of one of gaming’s all-time favorites. This mod joins a thriving scene of RTX Remix projects for classics like Black Mesa, BioShock, Unreal Tournament 2004, and path-traced updates for Doom and Quake originals. Performance remains smooth on RTX-enabled GPUs at 1080p and 4K, making it accessible for fans with modern hardware. You can download it on GitHub.
