Ecco returns: creator Ed Annunziata announces fresh Dolphin adventures

A new Ecco the Dolphin game is officially in development, with developer A&R Atelier revealing that several products and titles are underway. Ed Annunziata, the series creator and A&R Atelier’s Chief Creative Officer, emphasized the project’s significance, stating it has been years in the making and honors Ecco as a bridge between worlds. Annunziata first hinted at a revival last year, announcing plans to remaster the original Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time alongside a new third game tailored for modern gameplay. Sega renewed the Ecco trademark in 2025, fueling speculation, while a 2013 crowdfunding attempt for spiritual successor The Big Blue fell short at $55,764 of its $665,000 goal. The latest confirmation from A&R Atelier, founded by original team members in Half Moon Bay, California, marks a full resurgence for the Sega Genesis icon that debuted in 1992, with its last title being 2000’s Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future. A&R Atelier launched an official Ecco the Dolphin Discord server as a hub for fans, offering exclusive updates, behind-the-scenes content, and developer interaction. The studio’s website will serve as the primary source for announcements on projects and partnerships. An earlier countdown on the site pointed to April 25, 2026, hinting at potential reveals.
