A new fan project brings the classic 1989 Toaplan shoot ’em up Zero Wing to SNK’s Neo Geo platform nearly 37 years after its arcade debut. Developer h0ffman, known for prior Neo Geo ports of Shinobi and Golden Axe, announced the unofficial conversion as nearly complete, featuring selectable Mega Drive and PC Engine CD-ROM² versions. The port leverages Neo Geo hardware with six parallax background layers and two sprite layers for smooth scrolling action. All eight levels function fully, leaving only minor bugs and Neo Geo CD support for final polish. A YouTube demo showcases version selection and gameplay, highlighting the project’s fidelity to the originals. Zero Wing gained cult status through its 1991 European Mega Drive release, infamous for the poorly translated intro “All your base are belong to us,” which exploded as an early 2000s internet meme. Players pilot the ZIG-01 fighter against alien forces without traditional bombs, using a tractor beam to weaponize enemies instead. Official re-releases continue on platforms like Steam, Switch, and Evercade, but this homebrew effort expands its reach into the premium Neo Geo ecosystem.
