Nightdive promises locked 60fps for System Shock Remake on Switch 2

Nightdive Studios acknowledges the rocky launch of System Shock Remake on Nintendo Switch 2 and vows to deliver a stable 60fps experience through upcoming patches. Technical producer Justin Khan highlights the team’s excitement for fixes targeting the Unreal Engine 4 port’s performance issues. The game arrived with fluctuating frame rates, dipping between 30fps and 60fps despite the Switch 2 hardware’s capability for consistent high performance. Khan explains this stemmed from Nightdive’s first use of a non-proprietary engine, unlike their usual KEX Engine, leading to unexpected optimization hurdles on Nintendo’s handhelds. A pending patch will lock the frame rate at 60fps across most scenarios, leveraging Switch 2’s GPU headroom with custom effects and touchscreen inventory controls. The team gained valuable insights into Switch and Switch 2 differences, promising better handheld ports moving forward. In contrast, the original Switch version achieves a solid 30fps through clever forward rendering adaptations, defying Nintendo’s deferred rendering warnings for the Tegra X1 chip. This stands as one of the system’s standout technical feats, preserving dynamic lighting essential to System Shock’s immersive sim DNA.
