More than 25 years after its original release, Super Mario 64 continues to enjoy a second life thanks to the passion of the fan community. The latest example comes from the Harbour Masters, a development group well-known for bringing classic Nintendo 64 titles to modern PCs. Their new project, titled Ghostship, is a fresh fan-made PC port of Super Mario 64 that focuses on accessibility, performance, and ease of use. Unlike earlier PC builds that required users to compile the game themselves, Ghostship is designed to be far more user-friendly. Players simply run a ready-made executable and provide their own legally obtained game data. From a technical standpoint, Ghostship modernizes the experience in meaningful ways. The port supports high frame rates well beyond the original hardware limits, resulting in smoother movement and more responsive controls. It also allows for custom texture packs, giving players the option to subtly enhance visuals or completely refresh the game’s look while staying faithful to its iconic style. Another key advantage is platform support. Ghostship is already available for Windows and macOS, with a Linux version planned for the future. This makes it one of the most approachable ways yet to experience Super Mario 64 on contemporary systems without relying on emulation. The release further cements Harbour Masters’ reputation within the retro scene. The team has previously worked on native PC ports of other N64 classics, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, and Star Fox 64. With Ghostship, they continue their mission of preserving classic games while adapting them for modern hardware. As always with fan projects involving Nintendo properties, Ghostship exists in a legal gray area and requires users to supply their own original game files. Still, for fans eager to revisit Peach’s Castle with smoother performance and modern conveniences, this new PC port represents one of the most polished and accessible ways to do so yet.
