eGloom: reviving an Amiga FPS classic for Windows

eGloom is a fan-made throwback to one of the Amiga’s most beloved first-person shooters, now reimagined as a small but satisfying downloadable game for Windows and Linux. Released on itch.io by creator Francois3D at the end of 2025 and recently updated in January 2026, eGloom brings the first three levels of the classic Gloom to life using the Easy FPS Editor Engine (EFPE). The project focuses on faithful gameplay rather than flashy new features: players begin armed with a single-shot plasma weapon, progressing to more powerful arms like a green shotgun, with hidden upgrades such as a blue rapid-fire mode waiting to be discovered. Enemy AI mimics the feel of the original, with increased bite and responsiveness, while ammo pickups and weapon tweaks suit the modern engine. The roots of eGloom trace back to 1995’s Gloom, a first-person shooter developed for the Commodore Amiga and Amiga CD32 by Black Magic Software. Widely recognized as the first commercially released Amiga clone of Doom, Gloom featured frantic action, explosive enemy “gibbing,” and atmospheric level design that distinguished it from other early FPS titles.  Later, Gloom Deluxe refined the visuals and introduced features like play on a workbench screen. eGloom stands as both a nostalgic homage and an accessible way for new players to experience Gloom’s classic gameplay outside of its original Amiga hardware.
