StarCraft shooter rumors: Blizzard and Nexon may be working on new FPS titles

After years of silence that felt longer than a Zerg rush countdown, the StarCraft universe may finally be preparing a comeback — and not in the way longtime fans might expect. Instead of another classic real-time strategy title, new reports suggest that two separate shooter games set in the StarCraft universe are currently in development. Yes, you read that correctly: less base-building, more “run for cover.” For many players, StarCraft is practically sacred ground. Since the late 90s, the series has defined competitive strategy gaming and created generations of players who still instinctively try to manage imaginary mineral fields whenever they see blue crystals in other games. But the franchise has been relatively quiet since StarCraft II wrapped up its storyline, leaving fans wondering whether Blizzard had simply parked the Battlecruiser in the hangar for good. Apparently not.

According to industry rumors, Blizzard itself is reportedly working on an internal shooter project, while another licensed StarCraft shooter may be in development at Korean publisher Nexon. If both projects are real, that would mean two completely different interpretations of how the universe should play when viewed from behind a rifle instead of from orbit. This wouldn’t be the first time Blizzard experimented with the idea. Older fans may remember StarCraft: Ghost, the long-canceled stealth shooter that became something of a gaming legend — the kind of title people still bring up whenever someone says, “Don’t worry, it’s definitely coming.” The difference now is that the industry has fully embraced franchise cross-genre experiments, and Blizzard itself already has major shooter experience thanks to Overwatch. In other words, the technical excuse of “we don’t know how to make shooters” is no longer available.

A shooter perspective could actually fit the StarCraft setting surprisingly well. Instead of commanding armies from above, players could experience the chaos of Terran marine battles, Protoss energy-blade duels, or the deeply unpleasant experience of realizing a Zergling is suddenly much bigger when it’s at eye level. Strategy fans might miss the spreadsheets and build orders, but there’s undeniable appeal in finally stepping directly onto the battlefield — preferably with very heavy armor. Of course, none of these projects have been officially confirmed yet, which means we’re still firmly in rumor territory. Game development is unpredictable, announcements take time, and history has taught StarCraft fans one important lesson: never celebrate until the game actually ships. Still, the possibility alone has sparked excitement across the community. After all, a return to the StarCraft universe — even in a completely different genre — is something many players have been hoping for. And if two shooter projects really are in development, the biggest challenge may not be whether fans will play them, but whether they’ll finally stop asking, “When is StarCraft 3?”
