Z.E.N.E.K.O. aims to revive classic run-and-gun gameplay on Mega Drive and Neo Geo

Retro gaming fans may soon have a new reason to power up their old consoles. A new project called Z.E.N.E.K.O. is currently in development, and its creators have an ambitious goal: to create a run-and-gun game that can stand alongside classics like Metal Slug. Considering how beloved that series is among arcade fans, it’s a bold target—but the developers seem confident in what they’re building. The game is being developed by a group known as MS3 Research and is designed specifically for classic hardware, including the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and the Neo Geo. Instead of creating a retro-inspired game for modern platforms, the team is focusing entirely on the original consoles. That means Z.E.N.E.K.O. is being built to run directly on the hardware that defined the golden age of arcade shooters. Run-and-gun games were hugely popular during the 90s. Players would run through side-scrolling levels while shooting waves of enemies, dodging bullets, and taking on massive bosses. Games like Metal Slug became famous for their detailed sprite animation, chaotic action, and explosive gameplay. Z.E.N.E.K.O. clearly takes inspiration from that era. Early footage and details from the developers show a focus on fast movement, intense firefights, and large, dramatic explosions that capture the spirit of those classic arcade experiences.

The project has reportedly been in development for more than three years. Initially, the plan was to create the game only for the Neo Geo, which was known for its powerful hardware and arcade-quality visuals. However, the team later decided to expand the project and bring the game to the Mega Drive as well. That decision added an extra challenge, since the Mega Drive is significantly less powerful than the Neo Geo. Reproducing the same detailed visuals and fast-paced action on both systems requires a lot of technical creativity. One of the most unusual aspects of Z.E.N.E.K.O. is the cartridge technology being used for the game. The developers are designing a custom cartridge that goes beyond what traditional cartridges typically offer. It will reportedly feature a 192-megabit ROM, giving the game plenty of space for graphics, levels, and audio. The cartridge will also include an additional sound chip to improve audio quality. Perhaps the most surprising feature is a built-in headphone jack directly on the cartridge itself.

Because of this specialized hardware, the game is intended to run only on original consoles rather than through standard emulation. While that might limit accessibility for some players, it also makes the project especially appealing to retro collectors and enthusiasts who enjoy playing games on original hardware. Z.E.N.E.K.O. is another example of how passionate the retro gaming community still is. Instead of simply recreating the look of classic games on modern systems, some developers are continuing to create entirely new experiences for decades-old machines. It’s a niche but dedicated scene where technical creativity and nostalgia often go hand in hand. The developers are expected to launch a crowdfunding campaign to help complete development and produce the custom cartridges. If the project succeeds, Z.E.N.E.K.O. could become one of the most technically impressive homebrew releases ever made for the Mega Drive and Neo Geo. Whether it can truly live up to the legacy of Metal Slug remains to be seen. However, the ambition behind the project and the dedication to authentic retro hardware show that the spirit of classic arcade gaming is still alive and well.
