Renegade X 1.0 released: fan-made Command & Conquer Renegade finally arrives

After years of work by a dedicated community of developers, the fan project Renegade X has officially reached its Version 1.0 release. Developed by Totem Arts, the game is widely seen as a spiritual successor to the 2002 first-person shooter Command & Conquer: Renegade. The new release brings back the distinctive gameplay of the classic title while updating it for modern players. When Command & Conquer: Renegade originally launched in 2002, it stood out from the rest of the Command & Conquer series. While most games in the franchise focused on real-time strategy, Renegade shifted the perspective to a first-person shooter, allowing players to experience the battlefield directly as soldiers rather than commanders.  Inspired by that concept, the developers at Totem Arts initially started working on Renegade X as a remake of the original game. However, as development progressed, the project gradually evolved into something larger. Instead of simply recreating the old game, the team expanded the idea and turned it into a standalone title that preserves the spirit of the original while introducing new improvements and features.

The game centers on the familiar conflict between two iconic factions from the Command & Conquer universe. Players can join the Global Defense Initiative (GDI), a military alliance dedicated to maintaining global stability, or fight for the Brotherhood of Nod, a mysterious and powerful organization seeking to guide humanity toward what it believes is the next stage of evolution. The struggle between these factions drives the large-scale battles that define the game. Multiplayer gameplay is at the heart of Renegade X. Teams must work together to defend their own base while attempting to destroy the enemy’s structures. Players earn resources during matches, which can be used to purchase weapons, vehicles, and equipment. As a result, success depends not only on individual combat skills but also on teamwork, strategy, and coordination.

One of the key gameplay features is the Command & Conquer Mode, which blends first-person shooting with strategic base warfare. In this mode, both teams must protect important buildings, manage resources, and launch coordinated attacks on the opposing base. Victory is achieved when a team successfully destroys the enemy’s base, creating tense and strategic matches that reward careful planning and cooperation. The journey to this release has been unusually long. Development on Renegade X began nearly twenty years ago, fueled largely by the passion of fans who wanted to revive the gameplay style of the original Renegade. Over time, the project grew in scope and quality through continuous updates and community feedback. Reaching Version 1.0 marks a major milestone for the developers and the fan community that supported the project throughout its long development.

Another appealing aspect of the game is its accessibility. Renegade X is available to download for free, making it easy for both longtime fans of the Command & Conquer series and new players to experience it. With its combination of nostalgic inspiration, modern improvements, and strategic multiplayer gameplay, Renegade X stands as an impressive example of what passionate fan communities can accomplish. After nearly two decades of work, the project has finally become the complete experience its creators originally envisioned.
