Xbox has announced that its backwards compatibility program will return in 2026 as part of the brand’s 25th anniversary celebrations. The news was revealed during a Game Developers Conference (GDC) presentation by Xbox’s Vice President of Next Generation, Jason Ronald, who said the company is working on new ways for players to access and experience classic Xbox games. Backwards compatibility has been one of Xbox’s most popular features over the past decade. The program first launched in 2015 and allowed players to run older titles from previous Xbox consoles on newer hardware. Over time, Microsoft added hundreds of games from both the original Xbox and Xbox 360 libraries. Many of these titles also received enhancements such as higher resolutions, improved performance, Auto HDR, and FPS Boost, making them feel more modern on newer systems. The program was paused in 2021 after Microsoft released a final batch of compatible titles. At the time, the company explained that it had reached technical and licensing limits that made it difficult to continue expanding the catalog. Despite that, Xbox fans continued to hope the initiative would eventually return.

Now it appears Microsoft is ready to revisit the idea. According to Ronald, the company has been investing in game preservation and exploring ways to make classic titles more accessible on modern platforms. While specific details have not yet been revealed, he suggested that players will soon see “new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our past.” This could involve improved emulation technology, additional performance upgrades, or expanded support across multiple devices. Microsoft has been steadily building a connected gaming ecosystem that includes consoles, PCs, and cloud gaming, so bringing older Xbox titles into that ecosystem would fit with the company’s broader strategy. The return of backwards compatibility also ties into an important milestone for the brand. The original Xbox launched in 2001, meaning 2026 marks 25 years since Microsoft first entered the gaming industry. Reviving the program as part of the anniversary celebrations would be a fitting way to highlight Xbox’s history while giving players the chance to revisit classic games. For now, Microsoft has not confirmed which titles might be added or exactly how the revived program will work. More details are expected to be shared closer to the 25th anniversary celebrations in 2026.
