Amiberry 8.0.0 released: major improvements and fixes for the popular Amiga emulator

The developers of Amiberry have released version 8.0.0, bringing a range of improvements and fixes to the popular Amiga emulator. Instead of introducing major new features, this update focuses on refining existing functionality and improving compatibility across different systems. Amiberry is widely used by retro computing enthusiasts to run software from the classic Commodore Amiga on modern hardware. With version 8.0.0, the development team has concentrated on polishing the emulator and addressing issues reported by users. One of the key improvements in this release is better support for FreeBSD systems thanks to enhancements to the emulator’s JIT (Just-In-Time) compilation. This should provide improved stability and performance for users running Amiberry on that platform. Another useful addition is the ability to create custom mappings for the RAmiga key, allowing users to configure controls more easily depending on their keyboard or controller setup.

The update also refreshes several internal components. Updated AROS ROM files have been included, which helps maintain compatibility with modern builds and improves the overall emulation environment. Display handling has also been improved. The developers have refined NTSC resolution scaling and auto-cropping, helping older Amiga titles display more cleanly on modern monitors and TVs. There are also improvements to how the emulator handles CUE files. Some disc images use non-standard formatting, such as “TRACK 0” instead of “TRACK 01”. Amiberry can now detect and handle these files more reliably. Support for CD drive controllers has also been enhanced, which should improve compatibility with CD-based Amiga software and disc images.

Alongside these improvements, several bugs have been fixed. One issue that caused the virtual keyboard to appear automatically at startup has been resolved, and problems with input passing through the virtual keyboard have also been addressed. The update also improves HRTMon ROM detection and fixes some warnings related to it. Additionally, adjustments have been made to how Amiberry detects configuration directories, ensuring environment paths are identified more reliably. Behind the scenes, the developers have also updated several dependencies, including tinyxml2, and refreshed packages used in Flatpak builds. Another technical change makes the PCem component optional for RISC-V systems, helping improve compatibility with that architecture. While Amiberry 8.0.0 is primarily a maintenance release, it represents an important step in improving the emulator’s stability and compatibility. By focusing on fixes and incremental improvements, the development team continues to ensure that classic Amiga software can run smoothly on modern systems.
