Zool revival: classic ’90s Amiga platform mascot could be making a comeback

If you grew up playing games in the early 90s, you might remember a strange little ninja from another dimension who loved candy-themed worlds and fast-paced platforming. His name was Zool, and after years of being mostly forgotten, it looks like he might finally be making a comeback. A recent teaser by 33 games on Linkedin has hinted that the cult classic platform hero could be returning, sparking excitement among retro gaming fans who still remember the character from the golden era of platform games. Back in the early ’90s, the gaming industry was full of colorful mascots. Every company seemed to want its own character to compete with icons like Mario and Sonic. Zool was one of those challengers. Originally released in 1992 for the Commodore Amiga by Gremlin Graphics, Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension followed a small alien ninja who crash-lands on Earth and must prove his skills by completing a series of unusual and colorful trials.

The game stood out for its fast gameplay and vibrant levels, many of which were themed around candy and sweets. Zool quickly gained attention and eventually appeared on several other platforms, including the Sega Mega Drive, SNES, Game Boy, and Game Gear. Although Zool never became as famous as the biggest gaming mascots of the era, the game built a loyal following, particularly among Amiga players who still remember it fondly. Recently, companies connected to the franchise shared a mysterious teaser suggesting that Zool could be returning in some form. The announcement described the upcoming project as a “premium historical artefact and definitive physical release.” While the description is somewhat vague, it suggests that something special related to the classic game is in development. Several companies appear to be involved in the project, which hints that this revival could be more than just a simple re-release. However, many details are still unknown. There is currently no confirmed release date, platform list, or clear explanation of what the project will include.

This would not actually be Zool’s first modern comeback. In 2021, the game was revived with Zool Redimensioned, a remake that updated the original game with improved visuals, smoother gameplay, and additional modes designed for modern systems. The possible return of Zool also reflects a much larger trend in the gaming industry. In recent years, developers have increasingly been revisiting classic games and characters from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. Nostalgia has become a powerful force in gaming, encouraging studios to revive forgotten franchises and introduce them to new audiences. For older players, these revivals offer a chance to reconnect with games they grew up with. For younger players, they provide an opportunity to discover pieces of gaming history that helped shape the industry. For now, it remains unclear exactly what this new Zool project will become. It might be a collector’s edition, a remaster, or perhaps even something entirely new.
