Mortal Kombat II 3DO port update adds improved AI and 60FPS

A major new update has been released for the fan-made port of Mortal Kombat II on the 3DO. After stepping away from the project for roughly six months, Indie game developer Shaun returned to finish work on the game and released Version 11.9. The update focuses on bringing the gameplay closer to the original arcade experience while improving performance, fixing numerous bugs, and refining various visual and gameplay elements. The most significant change in this version is the complete overhaul of the CPU opponent AI. Shaun redesigned how computer-controlled fighters behave so that they play much more like they do in the arcade version of Mortal Kombat II. Earlier builds of the port could feel extremely difficult, so the AI has been toned down slightly to make fights feel challenging but fair. The new system is based on the original arcade logic, but it has been modified to create a smoother and more enjoyable experience for players. CPU fighters can now also randomly perform finishing moves, adding a bit more variety to battles.

Version 11.9 also introduces dozens of bug fixes and gameplay improvements. Many hitboxes have been adjusted to improve combat accuracy, and several issues with throwing mechanics—something that occasionally caused strange behavior in earlier versions—have been largely eliminated. Controls have also been refined, helping the game feel more responsive during matches. Performance has seen noticeable improvements as well. The game now runs at a much steadier 60 frames per second, which makes fights smoother overall. Visual effects that previously caused slowdown have been optimized. In particular, shadow effects used by characters such as Shao Kahn and Johnny Cage should no longer create performance issues during gameplay.

Several visual and animation updates have also been made to better match the original arcade presentation. Thunder’s intro graphics and animations have been improved, Shao Kahn’s shadow effects now more closely resemble the arcade version, and various animations throughout the game have been refined to create a more polished look. A number of quality-of-life improvements have also been included. Shao Kahn now begins his fights with a taunt, adding a bit more personality to boss encounters. Finishers now rely on proper positioning, similar to how they functioned in the arcade version. Audio has also been adjusted so it is no longer heavily panned between left and right channels, creating a more balanced sound experience. Behind the scenes, the developer also performed significant code cleanup. While this does not directly affect gameplay, it makes the project easier to maintain and improve going forward.
