If you’re a fan of the long-running R-Type series, there’s finally some good news on the horizon. R-Type Tactics I • II Cosmos is officially coming to the West this summer, giving players outside Japan a chance to experience the strategy-focused spin-offs of the classic shoot-’em-up franchise on modern platforms. The collection is scheduled to launch on June 18, 2026, and will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. While the game already released in Japan, Western fans had been wondering if and when they would get their own version. Thankfully, that wait is almost over. What makes this release particularly exciting is that it finally brings R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate to Western audiences in English for the first time. The sequel originally launched on the PSP in Japan and expanded heavily on the mechanics and story of the first game, but it never officially made it overseas—until now.

For anyone expecting the usual R-Type gameplay, it’s worth noting that the Tactics games take a very different approach. Instead of the fast-paced side-scrolling shooting the series is famous for, these titles focus on turn-based strategy battles in space. Players command entire fleets rather than a single ship, planning movements carefully and positioning their units to gain the upper hand. You’ll deploy different types of ships—from small fighters to massive battleships—while facing the alien Bydo Empire, the mysterious enemy that has been at the heart of the R-Type universe for decades. Even though the gameplay style is different, the games still capture the series’ sci-fi atmosphere and design, with combat systems that subtly reflect its side-scrolling origins. Both titles feature multiple campaigns and branching story paths, allowing players to see the conflict from different perspectives. Decisions made during missions can lead to different scenarios and outcomes, adding replay value and giving players more insight into the larger war between humanity and the Bydo.

This new release isn’t just a straight port of the original PSP games either. R-Type Tactics I • II Cosmos has been rebuilt with updated visuals and includes additional content, including new story elements that expand on the events of the original titles. Between the two games, players can expect a large number of missions and a wide selection of units to command. Collectors will also have something special to look forward to. A Limited Edition version will be available for PlayStation and Nintendo platforms, including extras such as a two-disc soundtrack, art cards, acrylic stands of iconic ships, and special collector’s packaging. For longtime fans of the series, this release is a big moment. Not only does it revive a lesser-known part of the R-Type franchise, it also finally makes the second game accessible to a wider audience. Whether you’re a strategy fan or simply curious to see a different side of the R-Type universe, R-Type Tactics I • II Cosmos looks set to deliver a fresh take on a classic sci-fi series when it arrives this June.
