Jak 3 finally gets a native PC port thanks to the OpenGOAL project

Jak 3 can now be played natively on PC thanks to the fan-driven OpenGOAL project, marking a major milestone for fans of Naughty Dog’s classic PlayStation 2 series. Originally released in 2004, Jak 3 served as the final chapter of the darker storyline that began with Jak II, and it remains one of the most ambitious platformers of the PS2 era. More than twenty years after its original release, the game is now being brought to modern systems through a native PC port created entirely by the community. Unlike many retro releases on PC that rely on emulation to run older console games, this version of Jak 3 runs directly on modern hardware, allowing the game to behave much more like a modern PC title.

The port is part of the OpenGOAL project, a long-running effort focused on preserving the Jak and Daxter trilogy. Developers involved in the project spent years reverse-engineering the original PlayStation 2 code and recompiling it so that it could run natively on modern operating systems. Because the original games were written using Naughty Dog’s custom GOAL programming language, this was a complex and time-consuming process. However, the end result is a version of Jak 3 that no longer needs to simulate PlayStation 2 hardware and instead runs as its own PC application, opening the door to a range of improvements that were never possible on the original console. Running Jak 3 natively allows the game to benefit from several modern upgrades while still keeping the core experience intact. Players can run the game at higher resolutions such as 4K, enjoy proper widescreen and ultrawide display support, and experience smoother gameplay at 60 frames per second. Performance is also significantly improved on modern PCs, and the native code makes it much easier for the community to experiment with mods, graphical tweaks, and other enhancements.

The port also works well on modern handheld PCs like the Steam Deck, making it possible to play the game portably with modern performance and controls. Although the port is already fully playable from start to finish, the current release is still labeled as a beta version by the OpenGOAL team. Some minor issues remain, including occasional audio problems and small graphical glitches that are still being worked on. Despite this, the overall experience is already stable and widely considered more than playable for most fans eager to revisit the game. With Jak 3 now available through OpenGOAL, the entire original Jak and Daxter PlayStation 2 trilogy can finally be played natively on PC, representing a huge achievement for fan-driven preservation and giving a new generation of players a chance to experience one of the PS2’s most memorable platforming adventures on modern hardware.
