
A new reverse-engineered source port is aiming to make Heretic II easier to run on modern systems. The project, called Heretic2R, was created by developer MaxEd and was recently highlighted by GamingOnLinux. It targets Raven Software’s 1998 third-person fantasy action game, adding a number of modern quality-of-life improvements while still requiring players to own the original game data. According to the project details, Heretic2R includes widescreen support, automatic HUD scaling, OGG music playback, faster map loading, bug fixes, smoother special effects, and a rendering framerate that is no longer tied to the old network packet rate. These changes are focused on compatibility and presentation rather than remaking the game. The port currently supports the single-player campaign, which is described as completable without major issues. Cooperative and multiplayer modes are present but largely untested. Some features, including GameSpy support, HiDPI support, and gamepad support, are not currently implemented.

Linux support is also still limited. GamingOnLinux reports that the port can currently run through Proton, while a native Linux build may need additional development work. That is notable because Heretic II previously received a Linux release in 1999, but modern access to the game has remained difficult. Heretic2R is not a standalone release and does not include copyrighted game assets. Players need a legitimate copy of Heretic II, updated to version 1.06, to use it. For preservation-minded players, the source port is a practical development. Heretic II remains one of Raven Software’s less accessible games, partly because it is not widely available on current digital storefronts. While Heretic2R does not solve the availability problem, it gives existing owners a more reliable way to play the game on current hardware. The project is still in development, with planned features including gamepad support, an OpenGL 3 renderer, and an OpenAL sound backend.
