
In our recent article, we remembered May 1987 as the moment the Amiga 500 arrived in Europe and helped turn advanced multimedia computing into something domestic, creative and deeply personal. It was the machine that made the future feel at home: on bedroom desks, in computer shops, beside televisions, under stacks of floppy disks and, occasionally, beneath a parent’s suspicious glare. Europe did not simply buy the Amiga 500. It adopted it. But behind that cultural story was a hard-headed business strategy. Commodore had to take a dazzling but expensive computer family and make it cheaper, easier to sell, easier to produce, and easier to explain. In other words, the company had to do something Commodore was sometimes brilliant at and sometimes hilariously bad at: turn technology into a product ordinary people could actually afford. The result was the Amiga 500.
The problem: the Amiga was brilliant, but not yet inevitable
The original Amiga 1000 was a landmark machine, but it was not the runaway mass-market hit Commodore needed. COMPUTE! observed in 1987 that the Amiga 1000 had won rave reviews and sold respectably, but had not gained the critical mass required to become another Commodore 64-style success. The magazine also noted the difference in positioning: the Amiga 500 was aimed at the home market, while the new Amiga 2000 released in March 1987 was aimed at business and professional users.
That split was important. Commodore was no longer trying to make one Amiga mean everything to everyone. The Amiga 2000 could wear the suit, talk about expansion slots and desktop video, and generally behave itself in front of business customers. The Amiga 500 could go home, plug into the family setup, and quietly become the machine that teenagers claimed was “for homework” before loading Speedball 2.
The production trick: keep the magic, remove the expense
The A500 was not just a cheaper Amiga by accident. It was a cost-reduced Amiga by design. Commodore changed the physical format first. The Amiga 1000 had a separate keyboard and a more expensive system-unit feel. The Amiga 500 moved to an all-in-one keyboard case, closer in spirit to the Commodore 64 and Atari ST. This immediately reduced complexity, made the machine feel familiar to home users, and helped Commodore present it as a proper family computer rather than an exotic workstation that had wandered into the living room wearing a lab coat.
Then came one of the most important production decisions: Kickstart moved into ROM. On the Amiga 1000, Kickstart had to be loaded from disk into protected RAM before the system could fully start. On the A500, Commodore decided the operating system was mature enough to live in ROM, reducing the fiddly startup ritual and making the machine feel more finished. It also sent a useful message to developers: this platform was no longer a moving target held together by enthusiasm and a boot disk.
The motherboard was simplified too. COMPUTE! reported that Commodore designed new custom chips and gate arrays to take over jobs previously handled by more common off-the-shelf parts. Fat Agnus, for example, incorporated more of the support circuitry that had surrounded the earlier Agnus chip. Fewer surrounding chips meant a less complex board, easier assembly, and a better chance of hitting the price Commodore needed. That was the real engineering story of the A500. Commodore did not remove the Amiga’s soul. It removed cost around it.
Commodore’s manufacturing advantage
Commodore also had something many rivals envied: it was a vertically integrated manufacturer with experience in computers, semiconductors and consumer electronics. Its 1987 annual report described the company as a fully integrated manufacturer of microcomputer systems, semiconductor components and consumer electronic products, with manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe and the Far East.
That mattered. The Amiga 500 depended on custom silicon, but Commodore had decades of experience selling machines at aggressive prices by controlling parts of the supply chain. This was the old Commodore instinct: squeeze the bill of materials, simplify the board, package the technology for volume, and then hope marketing did not trip over the power cable. European production and distribution also played a role. UK coverage of Amiga 500 advertising and grey-market imports noted that some machines had been produced at Commodore’s Braunschweig factory in West Germany, showing how important European operations were to the early A500 story.

The product: cheap, but not cheap-feeling
The clever part was that the A500 did not feel like a stripped-down disappointment. It still had the features that made an Amiga an Amiga: multitasking, a mouse-driven interface, custom graphics, sampled stereo sound, sprites, smooth animation, and a colour palette that made many older home computers look as if they had been printed in a damp newspaper.
Commodore’s own 1987 annual report pitched the A500 as an affordable home computer with multitasking, four-voice two-channel sound, built-in speech synthesis, 4096-colour graphics driven by proprietary custom chips, and an easy-to-learn window-oriented interface. It was aimed at home productivity, education and entertainment “for all members of the family,” which is a very shareholder-friendly way of saying: yes, Dad, it can do spreadsheets; yes, Mum, it can help with schoolwork; yes, children, it can make aliens explode beautifully.
The price was central. COMPUTE! contrasted the original Amiga 1000’s $1,295 launch price without monitor against the Amiga 500’s much lower $595 list price without monitor, calling price the greatest difference between the two machines. The article suggested that the new price, combined with advertising, could be the catalyst Commodore needed to make Amiga a major player in the home-computer market.
Marketing: the family computer with arcade swagger
Commodore’s marketing challenge was unusually delicate. The company had to sell the A500 as serious enough for parents, creative enough for artists, useful enough for education, and exciting enough for gamers. That is four audiences in one beige case. Modern marketers would call that “segmentation.” In the 1980s, it was more like trying to convince a family that one computer could replace a toy, a typewriter, a music studio, an art desk and a small arcade.
The official strategy was clear. Commodore’s 1987 annual report said the A500 was targeted at the home and education sectors, while the A2000 was positioned for business and professional users. It also stressed that both machines could run more than 700 Amiga software programs and were expandable to 9 MB. Commodore also knew it had an existing audience to convert. Its annual report said the A500 was designed to build on an installed base of around 10 million Commodore computer users worldwide. That was the upgrade path: from VIC-20, C64 and C128 loyalty into Amiga ownership. In plain English: “You already trust the chicken-head logo. Now please buy the expensive beige future.”
The advertising could be wonderfully blunt. One archived 1987 UK Commodore advert carried the line “Now other home computers are just toys,” which is exactly the sort of sentence that starts arguments in school playgrounds and sells magazines by the armful. There were also more structured efforts. In the United States, Commodore planned national sales promotion campaigns for the Amiga line in early fiscal 1988, including print and broadcast advertising, point-of-purchase material, and even a take-home videocassette for the Amiga 500. That last detail is very 1987: nothing says “future of computing” quite like asking customers to watch a tape first.

Distribution: Europe knew how to sell Commodore
The A500’s success was not only about price and specifications. It was about shelves, dealers, magazines and visibility. Commodore’s own annual report admitted that its European operations had proved marketplace relationships were as important as price and performance. The company was opening new distribution channels and entering new markets worldwide.
This was crucial in Europe, where the home-computer market was already lively, price-sensitive and magazine-driven. A machine like the A500 could shine in shop demonstrations. Put an Amiga next to an older 8-bit machine, load a colourful game or animation, turn up the sampled sound, and suddenly the sales pitch was doing the work by itself. The floppy drive may have sounded like a tiny robot eating gravel, but the screen looked like magic.
The UK market also showed how sensitive pricing was. Archived coverage of the 1987 UK scene describes grey-market imports, voucher promotions, and a £100-off Amiga offer that brought the A500’s price down to £399 in one promotion. One distributor was quoted as saying A500 sales had become “phenomenal” and that the machine had moved from being important but slow-selling to the company’s fastest-selling computer.
Financial impact: not a miracle, but a major turn
The A500 did not single-handedly save Commodore, and it would be misleading to pretend it did. Commodore was selling multiple product lines: Amigas, PC compatibles, C64s, C128s, peripherals and monitors. But the A500 arrived at a financially important moment. In fiscal 1987, Commodore returned to profitability, reporting net profit of $28.6 million after a $127.9 million loss the previous year. Net revenues were $806.7 million, down from $889.3 million, but the company emphasized improved operations, lower expenses and new products as part of its turnaround.
The Amiga line was already moving in the right direction. Commodore’s 1987 annual report said total Amiga unit volume was 100 percent higher than in fiscal 1986, and that the Amiga 500 and Amiga 2000 had been added to the product group in April 1987. Europe was the clearest early proof. Commodore reported that more than 100,000 Amiga computers were sold in Europe during fiscal 1987, with more than half of that total achieved in the fourth quarter with the Amiga 500 and Amiga 2000. The company credited strong European distribution channels for rapid sell-through in both business and consumer sectors.
The momentum continued into the late 1980s. A company history notes that Commodore made $48.2 million on sales of $871.1 million in 1988, and $50.1 million on sales of $939 million in 1989, helped by the combination of Amiga, DOS-based PCs and continuing Commodore 64 sales. That is the business significance of the A500. It gave Commodore a volume Amiga. It gave retailers something attractive to demonstrate. It gave developers a larger audience. It gave magazines something exciting to cover. And it gave Commodore’s balance sheet a product line with momentum, even if the company would later prove alarmingly skilled at misplacing momentum in cupboards marked “future strategy.”

The hidden cost of success
The A500 strategy worked almost too well. It made Amiga a household name in Europe, but it also tied the platform’s image strongly to games and home entertainment. That was commercially powerful, but strategically awkward.
Commodore wanted the Amiga to be a multimedia computer, a creative workstation, a video machine, an education machine and a home computer. The public, especially in Europe, often saw it as the best games computer money could buy. That was not exactly wrong, but it was incomplete. The danger was that Commodore’s most successful Amiga became the baseline expectation. Future machines had to be cheap, compatible, exciting and clearly better. That is not an easy job. It is especially not easy when PC clones are getting cheaper, VGA is improving, sound cards are spreading, and the market is beginning to ask the deadly question: “Is it IBM compatible?”
Why the strategy still matters
The Amiga 500 remains fascinating because it was one of Commodore’s clearest strategic successes. The company identified the problem, engineered the cost down, used the strength of its manufacturing and distribution network, targeted the right audience, and sold a machine that still felt special. It was cheap, but not dull. Powerful, but not remote. Mass-market, but not soulless.
That balance is rare. Many budget machines feel like compromises. The A500 felt like access. It gave ordinary users a machine that could paint, sing, animate, multitask, teach, play and surprise. It made advanced computing feel less like a corporate tool and more like a creative companion. And that, really, was the Amiga 500 strategy. Commodore took the future, put it in a keyboard, cut the price, shipped it to Europe, advertised it with just enough swagger, and watched as a generation decided that beige plastic could, in fact, have a soul.
