It had its own graphics, sound, expansion cards, keyboard layout, firmware behaviour and software expectations. To a Western user, it could look like a PC. To software, it was something else.

Born for Japan’s language problem

The original PC-9801 arrived in 1982, at a time when the personal computer market was still fragmented. There was no single winning architecture. Every country had its local champions, and every manufacturer believed it could define the future.

Japan had an extra challenge: language. English-language computers could rely on relatively simple character sets. Japanese computing required kana, kanji and much more demanding text handling. Displaying Japanese properly was not a small feature. It affected memory, graphics, fonts, input systems, printers and applications.

NEC understood this better than most. The PC-98 was designed as a serious business computer for the Japanese market, not as a hobby machine adapted later for office use. That mattered. A computer that could not handle Japanese elegantly was not going to dominate Japanese business. NEC did not merely sell hardware; it sold a complete answer to a domestic computing problem.

Not quite IBM-compatible

The PC-98 often confuses newcomers because it appears to belong to the same family as Western DOS machines. Many models used Intel or compatible x86 processors. They ran NEC versions of MS-DOS. They had keyboards, floppy drives, expansion slots and monitors that looked ordinary enough from a distance.

But PC-98 compatibility was its own thing. Software written for the IBM PC could not simply be assumed to run on a PC-98, and PC-98 software could not be assumed to run on a Western PC. The hardware architecture differed in important ways, including graphics systems, BIOS calls, memory maps and sound options.

This distinction shaped everything. Developers targeting Japan had to think about PC-98 support. Game studios built versions specifically for NEC machines. Business software vendors treated the platform as a first-class market. Users bought software with the expectation that PC-98 compatibility mattered more than IBM compatibility. In the West, IBM compatibility became the gravitational centre. In Japan, for years, NEC was the centre.

The machine of the Japanese office

The PC-98’s strongest base was business. It arrived when companies were moving from dedicated word processors and minicomputers toward personal computers that could handle spreadsheets, documents, databases and accounting systems. NEC had the brand recognition, sales network and technical fit to become the safe choice.

A PC-98 on a desk signalled practicality more than rebellion. It was not marketed as a toy or a lifestyle object. It was a work machine, and that gave it credibility. Japanese companies could buy NEC machines knowing there was a wide software catalogue, strong support and a user base large enough to reduce risk.

This created a classic platform advantage. More users attracted more developers. More software attracted more buyers. More corporate buyers encouraged more training, documentation and peripherals. By the late 1980s, the PC-98 ecosystem had become self-reinforcing.

For Western readers, the closest comparison is not one specific computer but the role of the IBM PC compatible market as a whole. NEC compressed much of that influence into a single domestic standard.

A hidden giant of Japanese PC gaming

The PC-98 was not only an office computer. It also became one of Japan’s most important game platforms, especially for genres that were less visible in Western console-focused histories.

Its 640 x 400 display gave PC-98 games a distinctive look. The resolution was well suited to sharp 2D art, detailed interfaces and readable Japanese text. Visual novels, strategy games, role-playing games, simulations and adult-oriented titles all found an audience on the platform. Many Japanese developers cut their teeth on PC-98 before becoming better known elsewhere.

The machine’s game library can feel surprising today. Western retro gaming history often jumps from consoles to DOS PCs and then to Windows. The PC-98 sits between those worlds. It shares some DNA with DOS gaming, yet its software culture is unmistakably Japanese.

Why Westerners missed it

The PC-98 was huge, but it was huge in a market many Western computer magazines barely understood. There is also a simple psychological factor. Computer history tends to follow the machines people personally used. Western writers used Western machines, so Western machines became the default story. The PC-98 was not unsuccessful. It was merely outside the usual field of view.

The graphics and sound identity

Technically, the PC-98 was not defined by one fixed specification. It was a long-running family of machines, and its capabilities changed over time. Early systems were modest by later standards, while later PC-9821 models moved closer to multimedia Windows PCs.

Still, the platform developed a recognisable identity. The high-resolution 640 x 400 graphics mode was central to its look, especially in games and productivity software. Text and interface elements appeared crisp. Artwork could be more detailed than on many lower-resolution home computers.

Sound varied by model and expansion hardware, but PC-98 audio became part of the platform’s character. FM synthesis boards, beepers and later PCM audio all contributed to a library of music that sounds related to, but distinct from, Western DOS gaming. It is a technical culture with its own expectations.

That is one reason the PC-98 still attracts preservationists. It is not enough to describe the machine as a Japanese DOS computer. The exact display timing, sound hardware and software assumptions matter. The experience lives in those details.

NEC’s empire was built on standards

The word empire can make the PC-98 sound more dramatic than it was. NEC did not conquer Japan through mystery. It won because it built a practical standard and defended it well. The company had timing on its side. It understood Japanese business needs early. It gave developers a stable target. It maintained compatibility across generations well enough for users to keep investing. It also benefited from the slower arrival of fully capable IBM-compatible Japanese computing.

By the early 1990s, the PC-98 was deeply embedded. Schools, offices and software houses had knowledge, tools and archives built around NEC machines. That installed base was powerful. Replacing the hardware was not just a purchasing decision; it meant disturbing a whole working environment.

But platform power can become platform exposure. The more NEC’s advantage depended on Japanese-specific hardware and software, the more vulnerable it became once cheaper global PCs could handle Japanese text properly.

DOS/V changes the equation

The turning point was DOS/V and the rise of PC/AT compatibles that could display Japanese through software rather than relying on proprietary Japanese hardware. This did not instantly destroy the PC-98. Big ecosystems rarely collapse overnight. But it changed the economic logic.

If a standard IBM-compatible PC could run Japanese software well enough, buyers had a reason to compare prices more aggressively. Foreign manufacturers could enter the market. Domestic competitors could align with global hardware trends. Component costs could fall faster. NEC could no longer depend on being the obvious answer.

Windows accelerated the shift. Once graphical operating systems and cross-platform applications became more important, the value of a unique domestic DOS ecosystem weakened. Users cared less about the old software base and more about compatibility with the wider world.

NEC adapted, but the direction of travel was clear. The PC-98 moved closer to global PC norms, while the market moved away from needing a separate Japanese standard.

The slow end of a local standard

The PC-98 did not vanish the moment IBM-compatible machines became viable in Japan. It continued through the 1990s, and NEC sold millions of units across the life of the platform. Later models incorporated more standard components and supported Windows, multimedia and modern storage in ways that narrowed the gap with global PCs.

But the centre had shifted. The same forces that made the IBM-compatible PC dominant elsewhere were now working in Japan: cheaper parts, wider software support, international compatibility and massive economies of scale. A domestic architecture could not easily compete once its core advantage had been neutralised.

By the end of the 1990s, the PC-98 era was effectively over. NEC remained an important technology company, but the idea of a separate Japanese PC mainstream no longer made commercial sense. The world had standardised around the global PC.

Why the NEC PC-98 still matters

The PC-98 matters because it proves that computer history was never as universal as it now appears. The global PC standard feels inevitable only in hindsight. In the 1980s, local requirements could still produce local winners, and Japan’s winner was strong enough to define a national software culture.

It also reminds us that compatibility is not just technical. It is economic, linguistic and social. NEC succeeded because the PC-98 matched the needs of Japanese users, Japanese developers and Japanese businesses. It declined when a broader standard could meet those same needs at lower cost.
