
In the second half of the 1990s, the Amiga market was no longer a mass-market computer business. Commodore had collapsed, official direction was uncertain, and many users were left with machines that still felt elegant but increasingly underpowered beside fast PCs and Power Macs. In that difficult gap stepped Phase5, a German hardware company that became one of the most important names in Amiga expansion. Its accelerator cards, graphics boards and SCSI controllers did not simply extend old computers. They gave the Amiga a second performance life. Phase5 is best remembered for its Blizzard and CyberStorm accelerator families, especially the 68060 boards and the later PowerPC models. For Amiga 1200 owners, a Blizzard could transform a compact home machine into a serious workstation. For Amiga 3000 and Amiga 4000 users, a CyberStorm brought speed, memory bandwidth and professional expansion. At the top end, the CyberStorm PPC and Blizzard PPC placed a Motorola 68k processor and a PowerPC processor on the same board, an ambitious answer to a platform searching for a future.
The start in Germany
Phase5 Digital Products was founded in 1992 by Wolf Dietrich and Gerald Carda. The company grew out of the German Amiga expansion scene, where third-party manufacturers had become essential to the platform. Amiga owners were unusually comfortable with upgrades. They added memory, hard drives, genlocks, graphics cards, flicker fixers, network adapters and CPU boards. The Amiga was built around expansion, and a serious user often owned a machine that looked very different from the original model sold in the shop.
Phase5 entered this market with a clear focus: high-performance add-ons for Amiga computers. It was not trying to sell cheap accessories or decorative upgrades. Its main business became accelerator boards, SCSI controllers and graphics cards. That focus mattered. In an era when Amiga users had to choose between staying loyal to their platform or moving to PC and Macintosh systems, Phase5 offered a practical reason to stay.
The company was based in the Frankfurt area, later associated strongly with Oberursel. Its identity was very European: technical, specialist, and closely tied to magazine reviews, dealer networks and user groups. Phase5 products were not always inexpensive, but they had a reputation for serious engineering. For many Amiga owners, the brand became shorthand for the best upgrade path available.

The Blizzard line for everyday Amiga power
The Blizzard series became one of Phase5’s most visible product families. These cards were aimed largely at owners of machines such as the Amiga 1200 and Amiga 2000, systems that had large user bases but needed more power for demanding software.
A standard Amiga 1200 used the Motorola 68EC020 processor. It was fine for classic Amiga software, but by the mid-1990s it struggled with ray tracing, image processing, desktop publishing, 3D rendering, larger hard drives and more ambitious multitasking. A Blizzard accelerator changed the character of the machine. Depending on the model, users could move through 68030, 68040 and eventually 68060 performance, while also adding fast RAM and, on some versions, SCSI expansion.
The Blizzard 1230 boards were popular because they offered a sensible step up without turning the computer into an expensive engineering project. The later Blizzard 1240 and Blizzard 1260 cards pushed the A1200 much further. The 68060 version was especially desirable. Motorola’s 68060 was the last major high-performance processor in the classic 68k line, and in an Amiga it delivered a dramatic improvement while keeping strong compatibility with existing software.
The Motorola 68060 gave classic Amiga systems a final and powerful 68k upgrade path. It was faster, more efficient and more modern than earlier 68030 and 68040 options. For users who wanted speed without leaving the familiar AmigaOS software base, a 68060 accelerator was often the ideal compromise.
CyberStorm and the professional Amiga
If Blizzard was the name many A1200 owners knew, CyberStorm was the line that defined the high end. Built for machines such as the Amiga 3000 and Amiga 4000, CyberStorm boards targeted users who were already invested in professional Amiga setups. These systems were used in video production, graphics, music, animation, software development and technical work.
CyberStorm accelerators brought 68040 and 68060 power to the big-box Amigas. The later CyberStorm Mk series added fast memory access and serious expansion possibilities. In practical terms, that meant a more responsive Workbench, faster compiling, quicker rendering and better handling of large applications. It also meant that ageing Amiga systems could stay useful in studios and workshops where existing workflows mattered more than fashion.
The CyberStorm name became especially important with the CyberStorm PPC. Designed for the Amiga 3000 and Amiga 4000, it combined a PowerPC 604e processor with a 68040 or 68060. The 68k CPU kept AmigaOS and existing software running, while the PowerPC processor could be used for native PPC tasks. It was a clever answer to a difficult problem: how to modernise the Amiga without breaking the software that made people want an Amiga in the first place.
PowerPC: a bold bridge to the future
By the mid-1990s, PowerPC looked like one of the major processor architectures of the future. Apple was using it. IBM and Motorola were behind it. For the Amiga world, PowerPC offered a possible escape from the end of the 68k line.
Phase5’s PowerUP concept was based on dual-processor accelerator boards. The computer would still contain a 68k processor for compatibility, but a PowerPC chip would handle new native code. This was not a clean break. It was a bridge. It allowed developers to write PPC software while users continued running existing Amiga applications.
The CyberStorm PPC used PowerPC 604e processors at speeds such as 150, 180, 200 and 233 MHz, paired with either a 68040 or 68060. The Blizzard PPC, built for the Amiga 1200, used the PowerPC 603e at speeds including 160, 200 and 240 MHz, again alongside a 68k processor. The Blizzard PPC fitted into the A1200 trapdoor slot, an impressive physical achievement considering the thermal, electrical and expansion demands involved.
Blizzard PPC was the compact PowerPC route for the Amiga 1200, using the 603e processor and giving desktop A1200 systems a path into PPC software. CyberStorm PPC was the high-end route for the Amiga 3000 and Amiga 4000, using the more powerful 604e and offering stronger memory bandwidth and expansion for serious users.

Graphics boards and the RTG shift
Phase5 was not only a CPU accelerator company. It also played an important role in Amiga graphics expansion. The CyberVision 64 and CyberVision 64/3D helped move Amiga users beyond the limits of the original custom chipsets. Later, CyberVision PPC and BlizzardVision PPC connected directly to the company’s PowerPC accelerator ecosystem.
This was part of a wider shift toward RTG, or retargetable graphics. Classic Amiga graphics were built around the original chipset, which was elegant but increasingly limited for high-resolution, high-colour work. RTG systems allowed software to target modern graphics cards instead. For users of large monitors, 24-bit graphics, web browsers, image tools and productivity software, this was essential.
The graphics boards gave Phase5 a broader role in the Amiga’s late-life modernisation. A fast CPU was useful, but a fast CPU with modern graphics and SCSI storage made a much bigger difference. A towered Amiga 1200 with Blizzard PPC and BlizzardVision, or an Amiga 4000 with CyberStorm PPC and CyberVision PPC, was far removed from the home computer image many outsiders still associated with the platform.
The developers and the software problem
Hardware alone could not make PowerPC Amigas succeed. Developers had to support the new processors, and that required tools, libraries and a software layer that could run PPC code beside the existing 68k AmigaOS environment.
This is where the PowerUP software environment became important. The PowerUP kernel allowed PPC-native code and 68k code to run alongside each other. It used modern development ideas, including GCC-based workflows and executable formats that felt more familiar to Unix and workstation developers than to some traditional Amiga programmers.
Ralph Schmidt became one of the key software figures associated with this transition. Other developers across the Amiga community experimented with PPC ports, multimedia tools, datatypes, games, plugins and system components. For a moment, there was a sense that the Amiga might evolve through a hybrid stage: classic compatibility on one side, PowerPC performance on the other.
Ambition beyond accelerator cards
Phase5 did not want to remain only an upgrade-card manufacturer. The company explored larger plans, including the A/Box concept, an ambitious computer system intended to carry Amiga-like ideas into a new generation of hardware. There were also plans around custom chips and alternative systems, showing that Phase5 understood the limits of endlessly accelerating old machines.
The idea was logical. Accelerator cards could extend the life of the Amiga, but they could not fully solve the absence of a stable official platform strategy. Old Amiga motherboards still carried old buses, old chipsets and old production realities. A clean new machine would have given developers and users a target that was not tied to ageing Commodore designs.
Yet ambition and delivery are different things. The A/Box remained unreleased. The PowerPC accelerator boards reached customers, but the broader new-platform vision never became a mass-market product. Phase5 was trying to build the future while selling upgrades to fund the present, all inside a shrinking and uncertain market.

How it ended
By the end of the 1990s, the Amiga market was too small and too fragmented to support every ambition placed on it. Phase5 had strong products, technical credibility and a loyal customer base, but it also faced the realities of specialist hardware manufacturing. Designing accelerator boards is expensive. Supporting them is expensive. Producing them in small volumes is expensive. Doing all of that for a platform without a stable mainstream owner made the challenge even harder.
In 2000, Phase5 entered insolvency and was liquidated. Licences and some production activity later moved on through other hands, and certain Phase5-derived products continued to appear under different branding. Some of the engineering knowledge also lived on through later PowerPC-oriented Amiga-like projects. But Phase5 itself, as the company that had defined the most ambitious Amiga accelerator era, was gone.
The end was not a simple story of failure. It was the result of a company operating at the edge of what the remaining Amiga market could sustain. Phase5 built hardware that many users wanted, but it was serving a community that had already lost its mass-market centre. Its products became technically impressive, culturally important and commercially difficult all at the same time.
Legacy of the Phase5 Amiga accelerators
Today, Phase5 accelerator cards remain among the most sought-after pieces of Amiga hardware. Blizzard 1260, CyberStorm 060, Blizzard PPC and CyberStorm PPC boards regularly attract attention from collectors, restorers and serious classic Amiga users. Their value is not just nostalgia. They represent a period when third-party engineering carried the platform further than anyone could reasonably have expected.
The 68060 boards are prized because they offer the ultimate classic 68k Amiga experience. The PowerPC boards are prized because they show the road not fully taken: a hybrid Amiga that tried to balance compatibility with modern performance. The graphics cards and SCSI controllers complete the picture, proving that Phase5 understood the whole system, not just the processor socket.
Phase5 did not save the Amiga as a commercial platform. No accelerator company could have done that alone. But it gave thousands of users faster machines, extended professional workflows, encouraged new software experiments and kept the Amiga technically interesting long after the official story had become uncertain.
For a company that existed for less than a decade, its footprint is unusually large. Phase5 belongs to that rare category of computer hardware firms whose products became part of the identity of a platform. To understand the late classic Amiga era, you have to understand Phase5: the German company that looked at a stalled computer line and decided that waiting was not an engineering strategy.
