That is why Mike Battilana and Cloanto should not be dismissed as irrelevant or passive. Cloanto may not behave like a flashy hardware start-up, and Battilana may not be the loudest figure in the retro scene, but the company controls a layer of the market that many commercial products still need. Commodore and Amiga nostalgia can sell a box, but authentic ROMs and licensed system software help make that box credible, legal and commercially safer. The numbers also tell a more serious story than some critics admit. A company selling a modern retro device cannot simply rely on the grey areas that hobby users sometimes accept. Retailers, distributors and partners need a cleaner chain of rights. Customers may not study the licence details, but the companies behind these devices certainly do. In that environment, Cloanto has leverage because the old software layer still has value.
ROM licensing is not a nostalgic footnote. It is a practical requirement for many commercial retro products. A licensed ROM can support compatibility, reduce legal uncertainty and give a product a more official position in the market. For classic systems such as the Commodore 64 and Amiga, the ROM is part of the experience, not just a technical file.
THEC64 Mini proved the retro market was real
The market evidence is stronger than many sceptics suggest. THEC64 Mini is estimated to have sold more than 250,000 units between 2018 and November 2023. At an estimated retail price of 50 US dollars per unit, that would represent around 12.5 million US dollars in retail sales.
That is not a trivial number for a product based on a computer from the early 1980s. It shows that the Commodore 64 is not only remembered by a small group of collectors. It still has enough recognition to reach former users, casual retro gamers, families buying nostalgia gifts and younger players curious about classic machines.
The key point is not that THEC64 Mini competed with modern consoles. It did not need to. Its job was to be affordable, recognisable and easy to buy. The product worked because it understood its market. It did not try to replace a PC, a Mac, an Xbox or a PlayStation. It offered a low-cost nostalgia device with legal software foundations and a simple plug-and-play experience.
Full-size machines added another layer
The full-size THEC64 and THEVIC20 machines are estimated at more than 60,000 combined units. At an estimated retail price of 140 US dollars per unit, that gives a retail sales estimate of around 8.4 million US dollars.
These machines were aimed at a slightly different audience from the mini version. A full-size keyboard changes the product category. It is no longer only a small nostalgia console for games. It becomes closer to a usable retro computer experience. That matters because the Commodore 64 was always more than a games machine. It was a home computer, a programming machine, a music machine and a cultural object.
The success of the full-size machines shows that there is still demand for a more complete retro computing experience, provided the price stays realistic. The price has to remain low enough because these products do not replace modern everyday devices. They sit beside them. They are secondary machines, bought for pleasure, memory, curiosity or specialist use.

THEA500 Mini was not a flop
The Amiga side of the market is often judged more harshly, partly because Amiga fans are passionate and partly because expectations can be unrealistic. THEA500 Mini is estimated to have sold more than 80,000 units from 2022 to November 2023. At an estimated retail price of 120 US dollars per unit, that would represent around 9.6 million US dollars in retail sales.
Calling that a flop ignores the time frame and the nature of the product. THEA500 Mini arrived in a much more crowded entertainment market than the original Amiga 500 ever faced. It was not competing in 1987. It was competing against modern consoles, handheld PCs, streaming services, mobile games, retro emulation boxes and a world where consumers already have multiple screens in the house.
Within that reality, 80,000-plus units is a meaningful result. It proves that the Amiga brand and Amiga software history still have commercial value. It also proves that ARM-based retro hardware can work as a product category. The anti-ARM Amiga argument is therefore too narrow. The question is not whether ARM hardware satisfies every purist. The question is whether an ARM-based product can deliver a legal, affordable and accessible Amiga experience to enough buyers. THEA500 Mini suggests that it can.

A combined 30 million US dollar retail market
When the estimated figures are combined, the result becomes more interesting. THEC64 Mini at around 12.5 million US dollars, THEC64 and THEVIC20 full-size machines at around 8.4 million US dollars, and THEA500 Mini at around 9.6 million US dollars produce a combined estimated retail sales figure of roughly 30 million US dollars.
Spread from 2018 across five years, that suggests an annual retail average of around 6 million US dollars. Again, this is not PlayStation money, and it is not supposed to be. But for a retro computing segment built around old intellectual property, modest production runs and specialist nostalgia, it is serious enough.
These numbers help explain why licensing is commercially relevant. If companies can create more than 390,000 unit sales and around 30 million US dollars in retail activity around Commodore and Amiga-related products, then the rights behind those products are not dead assets. They are active commercial tools.
It is also important to separate retail sales from profit. A 30 million US dollar retail figure does not mean the manufacturer, the licence holder or the brand owner receives that full amount. This is why Cloanto’s position is commercially important. Even if the fee per unit is modest, the total value becomes meaningful when products sell tens or hundreds of thousands of units. A small royalty on 250,000 THEC64 Mini units, 80,000-plus THEA500 Mini units or a future full-size THEA1200 run can become serious revenue over time. For hardware makers, the licence is also a form of protection. THEA1200 could become the next major Amiga test
The upcoming THEA1200 may become the most important Amiga-related retail product since THEA500 Mini. Scheduled for December 2026, it gives Retro Games Ltd a chance to move beyond the mini-console format and offer something closer to what many Amiga users actually wanted: a full-size machine with a working keyboard, AGA support, HDMI output, USB loading and a more complete computer-like experience.
That matters for sales potential. THEA500 Mini proved there was still demand for an accessible Amiga product, but its non-working keyboard limited its appeal among users who remember the Amiga as a real home computer rather than only a games console. THEA1200 addresses that weakness directly. It is closer to the emotional centre of the Amiga market, because the Amiga 1200 was not only a gaming device. It was a keyboard computer, a Workbench machine, a productivity platform, a demo machine and a bridge between the earlier Amiga generation and the more advanced AGA era.
If the price remains low enough for the nostalgia market, and if supply is ready for the Christmas 2026 period, THEA1200 has a realistic chance of outselling THEA500 Mini over time. It has a broader pitch than the mini model because it can appeal to casual retro buyers and more serious Amiga users at the same time. For one group, it is an easy HDMI Amiga with games. For the other, it is a more complete Amiga-style computer with a working keyboard and a stronger link to the original A1200 identity.
The timing could also help. By December 2026, the market will already understand the Retro Games Ltd formula: legal software foundations, simple setup, bundled games, USB expansion and familiar industrial design. For many buyers, THEA1200 will not need a long explanation. It will look like the Amiga they remember, but easier to connect to a modern screen and easier to buy than ageing original hardware.
That does not mean high sales are guaranteed. Delays, pricing, software quality, supply chain limits and competition from FPGA systems can all affect performance. But as a product concept, THEA1200 is stronger than THEA500 Mini. It fixes the most obvious weakness of the mini format and gives the Amiga revival a fuller, more computer-like retail product.
THEA1200 is important because it moves the Amiga revival from a mini-console format toward a full-size computer format. The working keyboard, AGA focus and Workbench-style experience make it easier to position as a real Amiga-inspired machine rather than only a games box. If the price and availability are right, it could become the strongest test yet for mainstream Amiga nostalgia.
Cloanto’s position is stronger than it looks
This is where Mike Battilana’s position becomes clearer. Cloanto does not need to be the company manufacturing every device. It does not need to make the loudest announcement or own every piece of visible branding. Its strength is that it sits close to the rights that serious products may need.
A hardware company can design a case. A software team can build an emulator. An FPGA developer can create a core. A brand owner can put a familiar name on the box. But if the product needs legally supplied classic ROMs or system software, licensing remains part of the equation.
That is not a weak place to be. In fact, it can be a very efficient place to be. Manufacturing hardware is expensive and risky. Stock can sit unsold. Components can become unavailable. Shipping costs can change. Retail margins can shrink. Licensing is not risk-free, but it can be a cleaner business when the underlying rights are valuable and demand keeps returning.
Battilana’s critics often judge him by the standards of a product promoter. That may be the wrong frame. Cloanto’s role is closer to that of a rights holder and software custodian in a fragmented market. In that role, caution can be rational.

Where this leaves Hyperion Entertainment
Hyperion Entertainment sits in a very different position from Cloanto. It remains important to the AmigaOS story, especially around AmigaOS 4 and later classic AmigaOS releases, but it is not in the same commercial place as the ROM and mass-market licensing layer that supports products such as THEC64, THEA500 Mini or the upcoming THEA1200.
That puts Hyperion in a more specialised and more fragile role. Its value is strongest among committed AmigaOS users, PowerPC Amiga owners and classic Amiga users who care about continued operating system development. That is a real audience, but it is much smaller than the retail nostalgia market buying plug-and-play machines. A new AmigaOS release can matter deeply to enthusiasts while still having limited influence over whether a mass-market retro product sells tens of thousands of units.
The legal uncertainty around Hyperion has also affected how the company is viewed. For years, the Amiga market has been slowed by overlapping claims, settlements, lawsuits and unclear boundaries between operating system development, ROM rights, trademarks and commercial hardware. In that environment, Hyperion can be both relevant and limiting. It has technical and historical importance, but its position has often been tied to disputes rather than broad retail growth.
This is why the current revival puts Cloanto in a stronger commercial position. Retro Games Ltd, Commodore-branded operators and FPGA projects need clean licensing paths for ROMs, system files and compatibility. Hyperion may still matter for AmigaOS continuity, but Cloanto is closer to the licensing layer that modern retail products must usually pass through.
A settlement or long-term agreement could still improve Hyperion’s position. If AmigaOS 3.2, AmigaOS 4 or future system components can be distributed more easily and without legal uncertainty, Hyperion could remain a useful part of the ecosystem. But without that clarity, it risks becoming a niche operating system custodian while the larger retro market moves through licensed ROMs, mini systems, full-size recreations and FPGA devices.
In practical terms, Hyperion is not irrelevant, but it is no longer the centre of gravity. The market has shifted from arguing about who controls the future of AmigaOS to asking who can deliver legal, affordable and easy-to-use retro products. That shift favours companies with clear ROM and software licensing power. It leaves Hyperion with a role, but not the dominant one.

Amiga Forever shows Cloanto’s practical value
Amiga Forever is an important part of the Cloanto story because it shows that the company is not only sitting on old rights. It has also turned the Amiga software layer into a usable commercial product for modern users. For many people, Amiga Forever has been the easiest legal route into Amiga emulation, combining ROMs, system files, configuration tools and historical material in one package.
That matters because it gives Cloanto credibility beyond paperwork. A rights holder that also understands packaging, emulation, preservation and user access is in a stronger position than a company that only owns a name. Amiga Forever helped normalise the idea that classic Amiga software could be sold legally to modern users, long before the current wave of mini machines, FPGA systems and retro hardware revivals became fashionable.
It also connects directly to the wider licensing argument. If a consumer can buy a legal Amiga environment for a PC, and a hardware maker can license the same kind of software foundation for a retail product, then Cloanto is not simply protecting history. It is monetising it in several directions. Amiga Forever is therefore more than a nostalgia package. It is proof that the Amiga software layer still has commercial life.
The Spectrum Next example matters
The licensing of a Commodore 64 core for the Spectrum Next adds another important signal. This is not simply about C64-shaped products or Amiga-branded mini machines. It shows that Commodore compatibility can have value even inside another retro platform.
The Spectrum Next comes from a different 8-bit tradition, yet the addition of a licensed C64 core shows that users want cross-platform retro experiences. FPGA devices and hybrid retro systems are changing the market because one machine can potentially host many classic environments. That makes the legal software layer even more important, not less.
As retro hardware becomes more flexible, licensing becomes a way to separate polished commercial products from informal hobby setups. A licensed core or licensed ROM package can become a selling point for buyers who want convenience and legitimacy.

Steam Deck shows the scale gap
The Steam Deck comparison is useful because it puts the retro computer market in perspective. Steam Deck reportedly reached around 1.62 million units sold in 2022, with estimates suggesting it would pass 3 million units during 2023. Its annual unit sales are above the Commodore Amiga 500’s 1991 peak year sales.
That comparison does not make the retro market look weak. It makes the market look properly sized. Steam Deck is a modern handheld PC backed by Valve, Steam, contemporary games, constant software updates and a huge digital store. It also launched in limited regions because manufacturing and support chains still matter, even for a powerful modern company.
Commodore and Amiga retro devices operate in a completely different category. They sell nostalgia, simplicity and classic compatibility. They cannot be priced like high-end modern hardware because they do not replace modern machines. Their success depends on keeping the price low enough for impulse buyers while still satisfying enthusiasts.
That is why 80,000 Amiga mini units, 250,000 C64 mini units and 390,000-plus combined licensed retro units should not be dismissed. In context, they are proof of life.
The revived Commodore still needs legal foundations

But branding alone is not enough. A modern Commodore product can generate excitement with a badge, a case design and clever marketing. That means companies operating in this space may still have to engage with Cloanto or related licensing structures.
This is why Battilana’s position remains relevant even when other companies appear more visible. Visibility is not the same as control. A brand can attract attention, but the software layer can decide how complete and legally clean the final product feels.

Why the anti-ARM argument misses the business reality
Some Amiga and Commodore purists dislike ARM-based retro systems because they see them as emulation boxes rather than true successors. That view is understandable from a technical or emotional angle, but it misses the commercial reality.
