Retro Passion starts selling fully built Amiga A600 Junior motherboards

The Commodore Amiga 600 has never had the easiest reputation. Released in 1992 as a smaller successor to the Amiga 500 Plus, it arrived at a difficult moment for the Amiga line and carried a mixture of sensible ideas and awkward compromises. More than three decades later, the same machine has become one of the most interesting classic Amigas to restore, upgrade and use. That position is now strengthened by the arrival of the Amiga A600 Junior motherboard, with Retro Passion starting sales of fully built boards for owners who want a cleaner route back to working hardware.

A fresh board for ageing Amiga 600 systems

The Amiga A600 Junior is a reverse-engineered replacement motherboard for the Commodore Amiga 600. It is not an emulator, not a modern FPGA recreation and not a redesigned computer that merely borrows the Amiga name. Its purpose is more direct: replace the original A600 PCB with a newly produced board that remains close to Commodore’s compact 16-bit machine while adding practical improvements for restoration work.

That matters because many Amiga 600 systems are now reaching the point where repair is no longer just a matter of replacing capacitors. Leaking electrolytics, corroded traces, damaged pads, broken connectors and old repairs can turn a once-simple recap into a full board-level recovery job. Some machines can still be saved, but others become poor candidates for long-term use. A new motherboard gives repairers another option: keep the case, keyboard, drives, shielding and custom chips, but move them onto a fresh, cleaner foundation.

What the A600 Junior brings to the bench

The A600 Junior is based around Commodore’s A600 Rev. 1.5 design, but it is not simply a direct photocopy of the original layout. The board includes a corrected PCB layout, stronger main Vcc rails and a more informative silkscreen. These changes may sound modest, but they are exactly the sort of improvements that matter during a real repair. A clearer silkscreen helps reduce component-placement mistakes, stronger power distribution can help system stability, and a cleaned-up layout makes inspection and diagnostics easier.

The board also includes changes around the audio and video circuits. The audio op-amp area has been revised, with component values adjusted compared with the original Rev. 1.5 board. On the video side, the A600 Junior supports the CXA2075M video encoder, a later alternative to the older Sony encoder used in many classic systems. For users who care about dependable output from original hardware, these details are more than cosmetic.

Another useful feature is the DriveSelector system, which allows physical drives to be assigned across DF0 to DF3. That does not reduce its importance. In fact, it is what makes the A600 Junior interesting. It keeps the machine tied to real Amiga hardware while solving one of the biggest problems in long-term preservation: the original motherboard itself.

Why the Amiga 600 was controversial

The original Amiga 600 was introduced in 1992 as Commodore’s compact replacement for the Amiga 500 Plus. It used the familiar Motorola 68000 processor and the Enhanced Chip Set, rather than the more advanced AGA chipset that would soon arrive in the Amiga 1200. It shipped with 1 MB of Chip RAM and AmigaOS 2.05, offering a more modern operating-system experience than the original Amiga 500.

On paper, the A600 had several sensible features. It was smaller than the A500, included built-in IDE support for 2.5-inch hard drives, and added a PCMCIA slot for expansion. Add extra memory, modern storage, a healthy keyboard, a reliable PSU and a clean video setup, and the machine becomes a useful everyday classic. Add an accelerator or PiStorm-style upgrade and it can become far more capable while still retaining the small original form factor.

Not a remake for collectors only

Its value is practical. It allows a classic Amiga 600 to be rebuilt with fewer uncertainties around corrosion, lifted pads and weak power distribution. It also supports the kind of upgrades many A600 owners now consider standard, including solid-state storage and flexible drive setups.

At the same time, it is not a casual product. A fully built board simplifies the process, but it does not remove the need for knowledge. Buyers still need to consider ROM choice, chip condition, case compatibility, shielding, power supply quality, accelerator behaviour and storage setup. Vintage computing remains a technical hobby, and the A600 Junior does not pretend otherwise.

That honesty is part of its appeal. The board does not turn the Amiga 600 into something it was never meant to be. It gives the original design a stronger chance of surviving in active use.

A more useful second life for the A600

The Commodore Amiga 600 spent much of its life being compared with other Amigas. Against the A500, it looked smaller but less expandable. Against the A1200, it looked underpowered and short-lived. Seen from 2026, those comparisons are less important. The A600 has become valuable for its own reasons: compact size, IDE storage, PCMCIA expansion, classic 68000 compatibility and a large software library that still runs well on real hardware.

The Amiga A600 Junior builds on those strengths. It gives owners a path to rescue machines that might otherwise remain unstable, corroded or incomplete. It gives repair specialists a cleaner board to work from. For a machine that was once viewed as a compromise, the A600 has aged into something far more useful. The A600 Junior does not rewrite its history, and it does not need to. It gives Commodore’s compact Amiga a stronger technical foundation for the years ahead, which may be exactly what this misunderstood model needed all along.
