The companies that supported the Amiga long after Commodore’s bankruptcy

When Commodore collapsed in 1994, the Amiga was left in a strange position. It was no longer backed by the company that had built and sold it, but it was not dead either. Thousands of users still depended on their machines. Video studios still had working Amiga systems. Hobbyists still wrote software. Dealers still had stock, spares and customers. After Commodore, the market became smaller but more specialised

The immediate post-Commodore years were messy. Ownership of the Amiga name and operating system moved between different hands. Plans were announced, cancelled, revised and argued over. Users waited for new machines that arrived late or not at all. Developers had to decide whether to stay with a shrinking platform or move to Windows, Mac or Linux.

Yet the smaller market also made the Amiga more specialist. The mass home-computer battle was over. The Amiga was no longer competing with cheap PCs on shop shelves. Instead, it survived through specific needs: video work, music, retro gaming, demoscene culture, embedded knowledge, old software archives and the emotional practicality of people who simply preferred the way AmigaOS worked.

For companies, this changed the business model. Success no longer meant selling hundreds of thousands of machines. It meant serving a loyal but demanding user base with hardware expansions, operating system updates, emulation packages, replacement parts, accelerators, graphics cards, network adapters, software collections and technical support.

One of the most important post-Commodore companies was Cloanto. Unlike companies that tried to extend the Amiga through new hardware, Cloanto focused on preservation, compatibility and legal access to the classic Amiga environment. Its Amiga Forever package became one of the most visible ways for former users and new enthusiasts to run Amiga software on modern computers.

This approach was significant because emulation had a legal problem. Running Amiga software was not just about downloading an emulator. Users also needed Kickstart ROMs and Workbench files, and those were copyrighted. Cloanto turned that problem into a product. It packaged the classic system files, configuration tools, historical material and emulation front ends into a legal, usable product for ordinary users.

Cloanto: preservation as a business model

One of the most important post-Commodore companies was Cloanto. Unlike companies that tried to extend the Amiga through new hardware, Cloanto focused on preservation, compatibility and legal access to the classic Amiga environment. Its Amiga Forever package became one of the most visible ways for former users and new enthusiasts to run Amiga software on modern computers.

This approach was significant because emulation had a legal problem. Running Amiga software was not just about downloading an emulator. The result was a different kind of support. It was less glamorous than a new motherboard, but arguably more useful to many people. For journalists, archivists, collectors and casual users, Amiga Forever made the classic Amiga easier to preserve. It also helped keep old software visible at a time when many computer platforms from the 1980s were slipping into legal and technical obscurity.

Individual Computers: new hardware for old machines

If Cloanto represented preservation through emulation, Individual Computers represented the opposite side of the Amiga afterlife: real hardware for real machines. Founded and led by Jens Schönfeld, the German company became one of the most important makers of modern expansions for classic Commodore and Amiga computers.

Its products covered a wide range of practical needs: accelerators, flicker fixers, scandoublers, networking hardware, memory expansions and adapters. These were not museum pieces. They were designed to solve the problems of using old computers in a modern environment. Original monitors failed. Old accelerators became rare. Hard drives died. Users wanted CompactFlash, Ethernet, faster processors and cleaner video output.

Individual Computers understood that the Amiga market had become technical and maintenance-driven. The typical customer was no longer a teenager buying an Amiga 500 for games. It was a collector, power user, repairer, developer or enthusiast willing to pay for a carefully engineered upgrade. That made the business smaller, but also more focused.

The company also showed how important Europe remained to the Amiga. Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands and Scandinavia all had active user communities long after the mainstream market had moved on. Much of the Amiga’s post-Commodore survival came from this European base.

AmigaKit: retail support in the long tail

Another key survivor was AmigaKit. The company became important not because it invented the Amiga, but because it helped keep the supply chain functioning. In a niche market, retail is not just selling boxes. It is sourcing rare parts, distributing new products, answering compatibility questions, handling repairs, managing small-batch stock and reassuring customers that the platform still has some commercial structure.

AmigaKit served classic Amiga users and later became closely associated with newer Amiga-related projects, including distribution and support for A-EON hardware. It also reflected a reality often missed in nostalgic computing stories: platforms do not survive on passion alone. They need shops, payment systems, shipping, returns, documentation and support tickets.

Textblock: The quiet importance of dealers
The Amiga survived because people could still buy things for it. A platform without dealers becomes an archive. A platform with dealers, even small ones, remains a market.

AmigaKit’s role was therefore practical. It helped turn scattered demand into actual transactions. For a niche platform, that matters. A new accelerator, case, adapter or OS release has little effect if users cannot reliably purchase it.

Hyperion Entertainment played one of the most controversial but important roles in the post-Commodore Amiga story. The Belgian company became closely linked with AmigaOS 4, the PowerPC-based continuation of the operating system. It also later released updates for the classic 68k AmigaOS line.

Hyperion’s work matters because operating systems are not static. Even a retro platform needs bug fixes, updated components, drivers, file-system improvements and compatibility work. AmigaOS 4 was an attempt to move the system beyond the original Motorola 68k hardware and onto PowerPC machines. It was never a mass-market revival, but it gave part of the community a modernised Amiga-like environment on newer hardware.

The difficult part is that AmigaOS after Commodore was never just a technical project. It was tied to licensing, ownership, branding and legal conflict. That slowed progress and divided users. Some stayed with classic AmigaOS. Some moved to AmigaOS 4. Some chose MorphOS or AROS. Others focused purely on emulation.

Even so, Hyperion helped keep the AmigaOS name active when it could easily have frozen completely in the mid-1990s. The company’s role is best understood as part engineering, part licensing battle and part community endurance test.

A-EON Technology: the high-end next-generation attempt

A-EON Technology entered the story much later, but it became one of the more visible companies trying to produce new AmigaOS-compatible hardware. Led by Trevor Dickinson, A-EON backed machines such as the AmigaOne X1000 and X5000, aimed at users who wanted dedicated PowerPC hardware for AmigaOS 4.

These systems were never going to compete with mainstream PCs on price or performance. That was not really the point. Their purpose was to provide a modern, dedicated hardware route for AmigaOS users who did not want the platform to exist only as emulation or vintage repair.

The challenge was obvious. Small production runs mean high prices. PowerPC was already a specialist choice. Driver development was difficult. The user base was limited. But A-EON showed that there was still a market, however narrow, for new Amiga-branded or Amiga-related computers decades after Commodore disappeared.

Building new Amiga hardware after 2000 meant fighting the economics of the modern PC industry. Commodity hardware was cheap because it was produced in huge volumes. Amiga hardware was expensive because it was produced for a tiny audience.

A-EON also invested in software bundles and enhancements, recognising that hardware alone was not enough. A machine needs drivers, utilities, graphics support and applications. In that sense, A-EON’s role was broader than simply selling motherboards. It tried to maintain an ecosystem.

ACube Systems, based in Italy, took a more compact and pragmatic route with PowerPC boards such as the Sam440 and Sam460. These machines became important in the AmigaOS 4 world because they gave users another hardware option when official Amiga-compatible systems were scarce.

ACube’s work showed that survival did not always require dramatic branding. Sometimes the platform needed reliable boards, drivers and continued technical attention. The Sam systems were not mass-market computers, but they gave developers and users something real to run.

ACube Systems: small-board pragmatism

ACube Systems, based in Italy, took a more compact and pragmatic route with PowerPC boards such as the Sam440 and Sam460. These machines became important in the AmigaOS 4 world because they gave users another hardware option when official Amiga-compatible systems were scarce.

ACube’s work showed that survival did not always require dramatic branding. Sometimes the platform needed reliable boards, drivers and continued technical attention. The Sam systems were not mass-market computers, but they gave developers and users something real to run.

This kind of support is easy to underestimate. In a niche operating system world, every supported motherboard matters. Each one represents testing, firmware work, driver support and documentation. Without companies like ACube, the AmigaOS 4 market would have had even fewer physical machines.

Elbox: expansion through standard hardware

Poland’s Elbox took another practical route with products such as the Mediator PCI busboards. The idea was simple but powerful: allow classic Amiga systems to use more standard PCI cards for graphics, networking, sound and other functions.

This addressed one of the biggest problems of the classic Amiga. Commodore’s original architecture was elegant, but by the late 1990s and 2000s, the wider computer industry had moved on. Standard PC components were cheaper and easier to find than rare Amiga-specific cards. By bridging Amiga machines to PCI hardware, Elbox extended the usefulness of existing systems.

The Mediator line was particularly important for towered Amiga 1200 and Amiga 4000 systems, where users wanted more expansion than Commodore had originally designed for. It was not a perfect solution, and compatibility could be technical, but it gave serious users a route to keep expanding their machines.

Phase 5, DCE and the accelerator legacy

Phase 5 did not survive indefinitely, but its influence after Commodore was enormous. The German company produced some of the most desirable Amiga accelerators and graphics cards, including Blizzard and CyberStorm products. Its PowerPC accelerator boards were central to the late-1990s dream of pushing the classic Amiga into a new processor era.

When Phase 5 ran into trouble, other firms and repair specialists helped keep parts of that legacy alive through servicing, manufacturing links and continued community demand. DCE became associated with production and support connected to some Phase 5 designs. Even today, Phase 5 hardware remains highly valued on the second-hand market.

This part of the story is less about a company surviving forever and more about products surviving their maker. A good accelerator can outlive its business plan. In the Amiga world, many did.

Haage & Partner was another important post-Commodore name, especially in software. The German company was involved in AmigaOS 3.5 and 3.9, as well as development tools and applications. The significance of Haage & Partner lies in timing. The late 1990s were a dangerous period for the platform. The original machines were ageing, but the promised future was unclear. AmigaOS 3.5 and 3.9 did not transform the market, but they gave users tangible updates at a time when many feared the operating system would simply stop.

That matters in computing culture. A platform can survive a bad year. It struggles to survive silence. Software updates, even imperfect ones, tell users that someone is still working.

NewTek: the company that moved on but proved the point

NewTek is a special case. The Video Toaster made the Amiga a serious tool in desktop video, and LightWave became one of the most important creative applications associated with the machine. After Commodore collapsed, NewTek continued as a video technology company and LightWave moved beyond the Amiga.

This was not long-term Amiga support in the same sense as Individual Computers or AmigaKit. NewTek’s survival was based partly on escaping dependence on the Amiga. But its story is still relevant because it proved what Commodore often failed to sell: the Amiga could be the foundation of a real professional business.

For many users in television, cable production and animation, the Amiga was not primarily a games machine. It was a low-cost production system. NewTek understood that market better than Commodore did. Its later move away from the Amiga was commercially sensible, but the company’s early success remains one of the strongest examples of third-party Amiga innovation.

In the productivity world, coders kept building utilities that made classic systems easier to manage, repair and expand.

The most important point is that the Amiga did not survive only because of a few companies. It survived because thousands of developers treated it as a living platform. Some wrote commercial software. Some released freeware. Some built tiny utilities that solved one annoying problem. Some created ambitious games or creative tools. Together, they kept the daily experience of using an Amiga alive, not just the memory of owning one.

For many users, this software community was the real support network after Commodore. It made old hardware feel less abandoned. It gave new accelerator cards and operating system updates something to run. It kept the Amiga visible in magazines, forums, archives and retro events. Without those countless developers, the post-Commodore Amiga would have been a collection of machines. With them, it remained a platform.

Why these companies lasted

The companies that survived Commodore did so because they adapted to a market that had become too small for normal computer economics. They sold to enthusiasts, professionals, collectors and specialists. They accepted smaller runs, longer product cycles and more direct relationships with customers.

They also solved real problems. Cloanto solved legal and practical emulation. Individual Computers solved hardware ageing. AmigaKit solved distribution. Hyperion worked on operating system continuity. A-EON and ACube provided new hardware options. Elbox expanded classic systems. Haage & Partner filled a software gap. NewTek demonstrated professional value, even as it eventually moved on.

None of this restored the Amiga to mainstream relevance. That is the important sober conclusion. The Amiga did not secretly win after Commodore died. It became a niche platform with a long tail. But in that niche, it achieved something rare: it remained commercially and technically active long after its parent company vanished.

The real legacy of post-Commodore support

The most interesting thing about the Amiga after Commodore is not nostalgia. It is continuity. Most abandoned computer platforms become static. The Amiga kept changing. New accelerators appeared. New operating system updates were released. New emulation packages improved access. New motherboards were designed. Old machines received modern video output, storage, networking and memory.

That continuity was uneven, sometimes expensive and often controversial. But it was real. It came from companies that saw value where the mainstream industry saw only an obsolete 1980s computer.

The Amiga’s post-Commodore companies did not save the platform in the commercial sense. They did something more modest and more durable. They kept it usable. For a machine launched in the 1980s and orphaned in the 1990s, that is a considerable achievement.
