
AmiQuake RTG and AmiQuake II RTG have both received the same kind of visual improvement recently seen in the Amiga Chocolate Doom update. It sounds like the sort of line that belongs in a technical changelog rather than a computer magazine headline, but for Amiga players using RTG graphics, fast 68k hardware or PiStorm-class machines, it is a meaningful step. The games are still Quake and Quake II. The monsters are not suddenly writing poetry, the corridors are not newly carpeted, and the rocket launcher remains a persuasive argument in almost every discussion. What has changed is how the old software-rendered image is prepared and presented on modern Amiga setups.
A cleaner picture without changing the game
The point of the update is not to turn AmiQuake or AmiQuake II into glossy remasters. These ports still respect the character of id Software’s originals, including the low-resolution, high-contrast, slightly grimy look that made Quake feel like it had been carved from wet stone and bad dreams. The improved 32-bit image reconstruction works in the display path, taking the engine’s classic output and rebuilding it with cleaner results when using higher colour depths.
That matters because both Quake games were designed around very different hardware assumptions. The original Quake arrived in 1996, when software rendering was still expected to do heroic things on ordinary PCs. Quake II followed in 1997 with a more science-fiction setting, bigger environments and a stronger push towards accelerated 3D on the PC side. On Amiga, especially in the RTG world, the challenge is different. The machine may be expanded, emulated or boosted by modern accelerator projects, but the software still has to bridge an old rendering model and a newer display environment.
Cleaner reconstruction can make edges look more stable, textures less rough when enlarged and dark scenes easier to read. This is not the type of improvement that shouts at you from a menu screen. It is more likely to be noticed when turning quickly in a corridor, watching weapon shapes move against the background or trying to read detail in busy scenes. In other words, it improves the part of the game you actually stare at while trying not to become lunch.
Why 32-bit image reconstruction matters
Quake’s software renderer is part of its personality. The game was famous for its fully 3D world, lightmapped surfaces, moody environments and multiplayer culture, but it was also built around techniques that were deeply tied to the CPUs and graphics systems of its day. When an Amiga port runs that experience through an RTG display mode, the final image has to be converted, scaled and presented in a way that keeps the old look intact while avoiding unnecessary visual dirt.
The new 32-bit image reconstruction quality improvement sits exactly in that space. It does not add new levels, replace textures or make the Fiend less rude. Instead, it improves how the final image is rebuilt for true-colour output. That can produce a more refined result while preserving the original art direction. For retro players, this distinction matters. There is a big difference between making a classic game cleaner and making it look like it has accidentally wandered into a modern shader pack.
It also fits a wider pattern in today’s Amiga software scene. Updates to classic ports are often about careful refinement rather than dramatic reinvention. Better scaling, cleaner colour handling, improved mouse support, audio fixes and display-mode options may sound modest, but they make old games more pleasant to use on real expanded machines and modern Amiga-inspired setups. Retro computing is full of tiny improvements that feel small until you remove them. Then everyone notices, usually loudly.

AmiQuake RTG: WinQuake spirit on Amiga
AmiQuake RTG is based on WinQuake, the classic software-rendered version of Quake. That choice is important because WinQuake represents the original CPU-driven feel of the game rather than the later OpenGL-flavoured direction. On Amiga, this makes AmiQuake RTG a natural fit for users who want the authentic look of Quake but running through an RTG graphics card or an RTG-capable modern setup.
The port targets serious Amiga hardware rather than pretending a stock machine can casually stroll through Quake while multitasking, playing modules and making coffee. A 68060 or better is the realistic territory, with PiStorm CM4 strongly suited to the heavier visual options. The port includes practical features such as double-buffered 256-colour graphics, mouse wheel support, native Paula stereo sound and configuration options for memory, sound, mission packs and total conversions.
The improved 32-bit reconstruction gives AmiQuake RTG another layer of polish. Quake’s dark stone halls, brown industrial spaces and flickering medieval nightmares can be visually messy by design, but messy by design is not the same thing as messy because the display path is struggling. Better reconstruction helps the old image remain coherent without sanding away the style. Quake should still look like Quake. It should just look like Quake had a decent night’s sleep.
AmiQuake II RTG: Yamagi power with Amiga discipline
AmiQuake II RTG is a different beast. It is based on Yamagi Quake II, a respected enhanced client that focuses on preserving the original single-player experience while fixing bugs and improving portability. That makes it a good foundation for an Amiga port because the goal is not to mutate Quake II into something unrecognisable. The target is still the 1997 campaign experience, only adapted for AmigaOS and RTG systems.
Quake II brings its own technical demands. It needs more memory, more CPU muscle and a more careful balance of visual options. The Amiga RTG port supports double-buffered graphics, mouse wheel weapon switching and AHI sound, with configuration options for particles, dynamic lights, MIP scaling and sound quality. It also carries the usual Amiga reality check: performance features are not free, and if you enable every expensive effect at once, your frame rate may leave the room and send a postcard from 1998.
The 32-bit image reconstruction improvement is especially interesting here because Quake II’s world is more colourful and more varied than Quake’s medieval-industrial gloom. The Strogg environments, coloured lighting and weapon effects benefit from cleaner presentation when the image is reconstructed for higher colour output. The result can feel closer to the memory many players have of Quake II: sharp, metallic, hostile and just bright enough to remind you that the future has terrible interior design.

The Amiga and Quake: an unlikely but stubborn relationship
The Amiga’s relationship with first-person shooters has always been complicated. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Amiga hardware was famous for smooth 2D graphics, excellent audio and a multimedia personality that made many PCs look like beige office furniture with a pulse. But Doom and Quake asked different questions. They wanted fast chunky pixels, heavy CPU texture mapping and, later, 3D acceleration. The Amiga’s original custom-chip strengths were not aimed at that world.
That did not stop Amiga users, because stopping Amiga users from trying unlikely things is historically very difficult. Doom-like games, 3D experiments and accelerator-hungry ports became part of the platform’s later identity. Running these games was never only about convenience. It was also a statement that the machine still had something to say, even if it needed a tower case, a graphics card, a fast CPU and possibly the electrical patience of a saint.
Quake was a particularly symbolic arrival. On PC, it represented a new age of real-time 3D, online deathmatch and engine technology. On Amiga, it became a benchmark for expanded systems and a badge of honour. If Doom had been the great Amiga debate of the early 1990s, Quake was the late-1990s exam question written in lava.

ClickBOOM and the official Amiga Quake moment
The official commercial Amiga release of Quake in 1998 by ClickBOOM, with PXL Computers involved, remains one of the key moments in late Amiga gaming history. By then, the mainstream games industry had largely moved towards Windows PCs and consoles, while the Amiga market was smaller, more specialised and increasingly dependent on enthusiasts and hardware expansions. A commercial Quake release therefore carried a significance beyond the game itself.
ClickBOOM’s release showed that the Amiga was still being taken seriously by at least part of the games world, even if the platform now needed more powerful configurations to keep up. It was not the same situation as the Amiga’s earlier glory years, when titles often arrived as primary versions or stood shoulder to shoulder with Atari ST and PC releases. By 1998, getting Quake at all felt like a small victory. It was the kind of victory that came with system requirements, performance compromises and plenty of forum arguments, so yes, a very Amiga victory.
That history gives today’s AmiQuake updates extra weight. They are not isolated curiosities. They are part of a long chain of attempts to bring PC 3D milestones into the Amiga world in a way that respects both the game and the machine. The tools have changed, the accelerators have changed and the audience is now more retro-focused, but the motivation is familiar: make it run, make it playable, then make it better.
Not a remaster, and better for it
What makes these updates appealing is their restraint. Modern retro projects can easily fall into the trap of over-improving the past. Add enough filtering, lighting, high-resolution assets and convenience features, and eventually the original mood disappears under a layer of good intentions. AmiQuake RTG and AmiQuake II RTG are more conservative. They improve the way the image is reconstructed, but they do not try to rewrite the identity of the games.
That is the right approach for Amiga Quake. These ports exist for players who care about the feel of the original software and the specific pleasure of seeing it work on Amiga systems. A cleaner 32-bit output path supports that goal. It makes the image easier on the eyes while keeping the familiar palette, geometry and atmosphere. The player still gets the same brutal architecture, the same fast combat and the same reminder that pressing the wrong key near lava remains a poor life choice.
A small update with real retro value
For anyone outside the Amiga scene, improved 32-bit image reconstruction may sound like a minor technical footnote. Inside the scene, it is exactly the sort of update that keeps classic ports alive. It reflects the practical reality of retro gaming in 2026: people are not only preserving old software, they are actively improving the way it behaves on the hardware they use now.
AmiQuake RTG and AmiQuake II RTG are not new games, and this update does not pretend otherwise. Instead, it makes two important Amiga Quake ports cleaner, more refined and better suited to RTG display setups. The improvement follows the same logic as the recent Chocolate Doom Amiga update: keep the original experience, but make the final image more readable and consistent for modern players and expanded classic systems.
That is a sensible kind of progress. The Amiga does not need Quake to wear a new suit. It just needs the old one cleaned, pressed and maybe checked for bite marks. With improved 32-bit image reconstruction, AmiQuake and AmiQuake II take another careful step towards making id Software’s landmark shooters feel at home on a platform that was never supposed to let them in so easily, but somehow did anyway.
