
The original PlayStation has reached the point where it is no longer just a games console. It is now a small grey reminder that optical media, moving parts and 1990s plastics were never designed to be immortal, even if the games somehow still feel like they are. For many retro gaming fans, the weakest link is not the controller, the power supply or even the famously moody memory card. It is the CD-ROM drive. Lasers fade, spindle motors get tired, plastic gears wear down, and one day a console that happily booted Tekken 3 starts behaving like it has been asked to read hieroglyphics in a thunderstorm. That is where ArcStation steps in. It is a new PlayStation 1 optical drive emulator, or ODE, designed to replace the original disc drive with SD-card loading while keeping the rest of the console experience as close to original hardware as possible.
What ArcStation actually is
ArcStation is a solderless ODE for the original Sony PlayStation family, including the larger “fat” PlayStation 1 models and the smaller PSone. Instead of repairing or replacing a failing optical drive, owners remove the original CD-ROM assembly and install the ArcStation board in its place. Games are then loaded from an SD card rather than from ageing discs.
The concept will be familiar to anyone who has followed retro hardware preservation over the last decade. Optical drive emulators have already become popular in systems such as the Dreamcast, Saturn and GameCube, mainly because disc drives do not age gracefully. They have the mechanical confidence of a printer during tax season.
ArcStation aims to bring that same practical convenience to the PlayStation 1, but with one major selling point: no soldering. That matters. Plenty of PS1 mods over the years have required wires, tiny pads, patient hands and the kind of eyesight usually reserved for jewellers and birds of prey. A solderless solution opens the door to more casual retro fans who want preservation without turning the kitchen table into a repair bench.

Why this matters for retro gaming
The PlayStation 1 library is enormous, varied and still culturally important. It carried Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, WipEout, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill and hundreds of stranger, smaller titles that helped define the CD-ROM era. The console was also sold in huge numbers, which means many units are still available, but availability does not equal reliability.
The CD drive is often the first major part to fail. A replacement drive can help, but replacement parts are not always consistent, and donor machines are only getting older. ArcStation changes the equation by removing the most failure-prone component while keeping the original CPU, GPU, sound hardware, controllers and video output in use.
That is important for purists. Software emulation is excellent today, but there remains a strong audience for real hardware. Input latency, analogue video behaviour, controller feel and even the quirks of old save systems all matter to collectors and players who want the original experience without the disc drive drama. ArcStation is not trying to modernise the PlayStation into something else. It is trying to make the machine less dependent on a laser that probably deserves retirement and a cup of tea.
Solderless installation is the headline feature
The biggest practical attraction is the installation process. ArcStation is intended to replace the CD-ROM drive using the existing internal connectors and included cables. Owners open the PlayStation, remove the optical drive, connect the necessary cables, set the correct region using onboard DIP switches, and place the board inside the console using its fitted mount.
That makes it very different from older PS1 modchip installs. A traditional modchip can be cheap and effective, but it usually demands soldering to the motherboard. For experienced modders, that is a quick job. For everyone else, it is a suspense film with flux.
ArcStation avoids that by acting as a replacement drive rather than a security bypass chip. It emulates the behaviour of the original CD-ROM drive closely enough that the console treats it like a real disc mechanism. For games that check for modchips, the system is meant to behave like an unmodified console. That is a neat trick, because it means the board is not just loading files from an SD card; it is trying to mimic the original hardware conversation at a low level.
SD card loading and supported formats
Once installed, ArcStation turns the PlayStation into an SD-card-based system. Users copy their game images to an SD card, organise them into folders or subfolders, refresh the game list from the device menu and launch titles from the original console.
The supported file formats include CUE/BIN, ISO and single BIN images. That covers the common formats used for PlayStation disc preservation, including multi-track CD images where the CUE file is needed to describe the disc layout. For best results, game folders can be organised cleanly, which is a relief for anyone whose retro library currently looks like it was arranged by a raccoon with a zip file addiction.
ArcStation supports SD cards of 1 GB or larger, formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Low-latency A1 or A2-rated cards are recommended for best performance. That is sensible because an ODE does not need the biggest card on the planet; it needs consistent access times. The PS1 is not asking for a data centre. It just wants to boot Ridge Racer without coughing.

Region-free play without the usual fuss
Region-free support is another major part of the appeal. ArcStation is designed to allow games from all regions to run, including on PSone consoles. For collectors, that matters because the PlayStation library differs heavily between Europe, Japan and North America. Some games were never released globally, some versions run better, and some boxes simply look better on a shelf. Yes, that is a valid technical argument. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.
The board uses DIP switches to match the installed console’s region, with settings for European PAL, Japanese NTSC-J, American NTSC-U and a separate setting for consoles with existing modchips. This gives users flexibility, although older PlayStation revisions can still run into video output limitations. For example, an early PAL console may not properly display a 60 Hz NTSC game on certain setups, even if the game itself loads. In that case, audio may play while the screen stays black, which is the retro equivalent of being told the party is happening but you are not on the guest list.
Multidisc games are handled properly
One of the awkward parts of replacing a disc drive is dealing with games that originally shipped on multiple CDs. The PlayStation has plenty of them, especially RPGs and larger late-generation releases. ArcStation tackles this with multidisc queue support.
For most multidisc games, the device can automatically build a disc queue when a title is launched. Users can also create a manual queue of up to six discs and switch between them during gameplay using the ArcStation button and its small LED display. That is a practical solution, because several PlayStation games expect the player to open the lid, swap discs and continue without resetting the console.
In other words, the machine still gets the “please insert disc two” moment, but the player does not need to go hunting through jewel cases. This is progress. Not glamorous progress, perhaps, but anyone who has ever mixed up disc three and disc four of a JRPG will understand.
Virtual memory cards fix an old annoyance
Another useful feature is virtual memory card support on the larger PlayStation models. Instead of relying entirely on physical memory cards, ArcStation can create dedicated memory card files on the SD card. Each game can have its own save file, which helps avoid the classic PS1 problem of shuffling blocks around like a tiny accountant.
The original PlayStation memory card was charming but limited. It also had a special talent for becoming full exactly when the game asked whether you wanted to save after a difficult boss fight. Virtual memory cards make that issue much less annoying by giving each game its own space.
There is one important limitation: virtual memory card support is not available on the smaller PSone through the solderless setup. The same applies to reset-to-menu via controller shortcut. This is due to internal layout and connector differences. The PSone still supports the core ODE functions, but some convenience features are reserved for the larger models.
Menu options and daily use
ArcStation includes a built-in menu system with options for refreshing the game list, choosing display themes, enabling sound cues, setting the menu video mode, rotating the LED display and automatically starting the last played game after a short delay. It can also use database titles or file and folder names for displaying games in the menu.
The reset-via-gamepad function, where supported, lets players return to the ArcStation menu with a controller button combination. This sounds small, but it makes everyday use far smoother. Nobody wants to power-cycle a console repeatedly just to switch games, especially when the power button on a decades-old machine may already have the emotional stability of a lift in a horror film.
There is also special compatibility handling for early PlayStation motherboard revisions, including the PU-8 boards found in some of the earliest models. Enabling the correct setting can improve performance on those machines, which is useful because early PlayStations can behave differently from later revisions.

LibCrypt and protected games
ArcStation also supports LibCrypt-protected games, which is important for parts of the European PlayStation library. LibCrypt was a copy protection method used by some titles, and it can cause problems if the required patch data is missing. ArcStation handles this by supporting matching patch files placed alongside the game image.
This is the sort of feature that separates a serious ODE from a simple loader. A PlayStation library is not just a folder of identical disc images. It includes regional quirks, protection schemes, multi-track audio, multi-disc structures and video-mode oddities. Supporting those details makes the device much more useful for preservation-focused users.
Pricing and availability
ArcStation has been listed with preorder pricing around the €130 to €145 range depending on tier, with the regular in-stock price set at €150. The first preorder tier sold out, while later tiers moved upward in price. At the time of writing, availability has been affected by a temporary pause connected to payment processing, so buyers may need to watch for preorder reopening before placing an order.
The kit includes the ArcStation device, a preinstalled 3D-printed enclosure, optical and motor cables, SIO0 flat cables, power cables and online documentation. The SD card is not included, so users will need to supply their own. That is not a major drawback, but it is worth noting before checkout. Nothing kills new-hardware excitement faster than realising the one missing part is sitting in a drawer at someone else’s house.
Who should consider ArcStation
ArcStation is best suited to players who want to keep using original PlayStation hardware but no longer trust the optical drive. It is also attractive for collectors with large libraries who want to reduce wear on their discs, or for retro setups where convenience matters as much as authenticity.
It is less compelling for users who are perfectly happy with software emulation or for those who enjoy original disc handling as part of the experience. Some collectors genuinely like putting a disc into the machine, closing the lid and hearing the drive spin up. There is nothing wrong with that. Retro gaming is full of rituals, and some of them only look strange from the outside.
The strongest audience will likely be practical preservationists: people who want real hardware, original controllers, proper video output and a cleaner long-term way to play their own backed-up disc images. For them, ArcStation looks like one of the most accessible PS1 hardware upgrades yet.
A clever upgrade for a console that deserves it
The PlayStation 1 is not going away. Its library is too important, its hardware is still widely loved, and its influence is baked into modern gaming. But keeping original consoles alive requires more than nostalgia. It requires replacement parts, careful mods and new hardware that respects old machines instead of replacing them outright.
ArcStation appears to hit that balance well. It removes the ageing CD drive, adds SD-card convenience, supports region-free play, handles multidisc games, offers virtual memory cards on supported models and avoids soldering. That combination makes it unusually approachable for a serious retro hardware modification.
It is not magic, and it does not erase every limitation of 1990s console hardware. Early revisions still have video-mode caveats, PSone owners miss out on some convenience features, and availability will matter once demand from the retro community kicks in. Even so, ArcStation looks like a thoughtful answer to a very real problem.
For anyone with a PlayStation that still works but sounds like it is negotiating with every disc, this could be the upgrade that keeps the console in active service for years. The old grey box may not need a new life. It may simply need a new drive, a good SD card and fewer moving parts to complain about.
