It used flat-shaded polygons to create Formula-style cars, sweeping circuits and multiple camera views. Today, it looks clean, sharp and obviously old. Both helped ageing consoles do things that seemed beyond their standard specifications. Both became part of the wider story of how game companies tried to stretch a generation before moving on.

Nintendo’s Super FX chip was most famously used in Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. It gave the SNES extra processing power for polygon graphics and later appeared in other games using related technology. Nintendo’s approach felt more like a small platform strategy. Super FX was not everywhere, but it was more than a one-game curiosity.

Sega’s SVP was different. It was more like a precision strike. Sega used it for Virtua Racing, proved the point, and then effectively left it there. No big wave of SVP titles followed. No library of Mega Drive polygon experiments arrived. The chip became famous mainly because it appeared once, did something remarkable, and vanished like a very expensive guest at a party.

The difference says a lot about the two companies. Nintendo tended to fold cartridge enhancement into carefully managed software plans. Today, Virtua Racing on Mega Drive is not the smoothest way to play the game. Later versions are technically better, and the arcade original remains the purest expression of the concept. But the SVP cartridge is still the most intriguing version because it captures a very specific moment in gaming history.

It belongs to a period when engineers were stretching old machines in surprising ways, when magazines could still make a single screenshot feel mysterious, and when a cartridge could arrive with rumours attached. Those questions are the real legacy of Virtua Racing. The SVP chip gave Sega’s 16-bit console a brief taste of the polygon future.
