Before the iPad: how Acorn’s NewsPAD imagined the future of tablets

Every so often, the history of computing throws up a machine that looks as if it has wandered in from the future, taken one look around, and immediately regretted the journey. The Acorn NewsPAD is one of those machines. Built in the mid-1990s, it was a tablet-style computer with a colour touchscreen, ARM-based hardware and a job description that sounds almost boringly normal today: show news, images, sound and multimedia on a portable screen. In other words, it was playing with the basic idea of the modern tablet years before tablets became an everyday object found on sofas, trains, kitchen counters and in the hands of children who can somehow unlock them faster than adults. Acorn knew a thing or two about smart hardware

Acorn was not some random firm knocking together a plastic mock-up after seeing a sci-fi film. The Cambridge company had already earned its place in British computing through the BBC Micro, the Archimedes and, crucially, its role in the creation of ARM technology.

That last part matters. ARM would become one of the quiet giants of modern computing, powering phones, tablets and embedded devices across the world. NewsPAD used ARM-based hardware long before most people had any reason to care about processor efficiency in a mobile device. Acorn understood that portable computing needed more than raw speed. It needed sensible power use, compact design and enough performance to make the experience feel smooth rather than heroic.

Inside the NewsPAD was a 40 MHz ARM7500 processor. It had a 10.4-inch active-matrix colour LCD with an 800 x 600 resolution, a touchscreen, audio capability, storage, PCMCIA expansion and docking options. That was not a toy specification for the period. It was a proper working platform for showing what a portable digital newspaper could look like.

Of course, it weighed around 2 kg. This is where the future briefly meets the gym membership. A 2 kg tablet is portable, yes, but so is a brick if you are committed enough.

What NewsPAD was actually for

The most common mistake is to treat the NewsPAD as a consumer tablet that somehow lost the race before the race had started. That is unfair. NewsPAD was a technology demonstrator. Its purpose was to prove an idea, not to become the device every commuter carried to read the morning headlines.

The project explored the possibility of electronic newspapers. Not just scanned newspaper pages. Not a PDF dumped onto a screen with a shrug. The thinking was more advanced than that. NewsPAD pointed towards rich, personalised media: stories selected by interest, multimedia elements alongside text, interactive navigation and a reading experience that could be updated electronically.

In modern terms, it was moving towards the app-based news experience before apps, app stores and push notifications became normal. The device asked a practical question: what would happen if the newspaper stopped being a fixed bundle of paper and became a digital service?

That question turned out to be one of the biggest questions in publishing. Newspapers would spend the next decades wrestling with it, sometimes brilliantly, sometimes badly, sometimes by putting up cookie pop-ups so aggressive they feel like a hostage negotiation.

The hardware was serious, but the world was not ready

Look at the NewsPAD specification today and it is easy to smile. A 40 MHz processor. A thick case. A hard drive. PCMCIA cards. Docking stations. Battery life measured in a few hours. It sounds ancient because it is ancient in computer years, which are roughly the same as dog years after drinking espresso.

But for its time, the device made sense. Large colour LCDs were expensive and power-hungry. Touchscreens were not yet the sleek, glassy surfaces people now expect. Wireless networking was not something most users could take for granted. Batteries had not reached the point where a tablet could be thin, light and casually used all day.

That is the key. NewsPAD had the outline of the future, but not the materials of the future. It had the concept, the screen, the processor thinking and the media idea. What it lacked was the surrounding ecosystem that later made tablets practical.

A modern tablet is not just a slab of hardware. It depends on fast networks, mature batteries, compact components, polished software, cloud services, app distribution, video platforms, payment systems and millions of users already trained by smartphones. NewsPAD had to imagine all of that from a world where many people were still asking whether the internet was worth the monthly bill.

Why it was not the iPad before the iPad

There is an easy headline here: Acorn built the iPad in the 1990s. It is catchy. It is also not quite true. The iPad succeeded in 2010 because it arrived into a prepared world. People already understood touchscreens because of smartphones. Wi-Fi was ordinary. Mobile processors were powerful and efficient. Screens were better. Batteries were better. Digital media services were ready. Apple also had a huge platform, a polished interface and a customer base that knew what an app was.

NewsPAD had none of that advantage. It was trying to demonstrate a category before the category had social permission to exist. There were no familiar tablet habits. No app economy. No streaming culture. No assumption that people would happily read, browse, watch and shop on a flat screen for hours.

So no, NewsPAD was not the iPad in disguise. It was more like a rough field sketch of a landscape that would later be painted in full colour. The sketch matters, but it is not the finished painting.

The newspaper problem

NewsPAD’s focus on newspapers is one of the best parts of the story, because it shows how people in the 1990s were already thinking beyond the printed page. Publishing was beginning to feel the first pressure of digital change. Editors, designers and technologists could see that screens would alter how stories were packaged and consumed.

The challenge was that newspapers were not only a format. They were a habit. You bought one, opened it, folded it badly, lost the sports section to someone else and got ink on your fingers. A tablet promised something cleaner, smarter and more flexible. But it also required readers to change behaviour, publishers to change production systems and networks to become reliable enough to deliver fresh content. That was a lot to ask in one jump.

The NewsPAD idea was forward-looking because it understood that digital publishing would not simply be print on a screen. It would become interactive, personalised and multimedia. That prediction was broadly right. What nobody had yet solved was how to make the device cheap enough, light enough and useful enough for ordinary people to want one.

Paper, annoying as it can be, has a few advantages. It is thin, cheap, flexible, disposable and never asks for a firmware update halfway through breakfast.

A machine caught between eras

The NewsPAD feels strange now because it sits between two computing worlds. One foot is in the old world of docks, ports, cards, hard drives and technical demonstration projects. The other foot is in the world of tablets, mobile media and touch-first computing.

That makes it valuable. It shows the transition in progress. You can see engineers trying to solve future problems with the tools available at the time. They knew users might want portable digital information. They knew ARM hardware could help. They knew screens would become central. They knew media would become richer and less tied to paper.

But knowing the direction is not the same as having the road built.

The device’s thickness and weight tell the story. NewsPAD could show the idea, but it could not yet make the idea effortless. And consumer technology only becomes mass-market when the difficult parts disappear from view. Nobody wants to think about power management, network delivery or input methods. They want to tap a screen and complain that the article has too many adverts.

Why NewsPAD still deserves attention

NewsPAD deserves more than a footnote because it was right about several important things. It treated the tablet as a media device rather than just a business machine. It used efficient ARM-based computing in a portable design. It saw that news would become digital, interactive and personal. It understood that a screen could be the main interface, not merely a display attached to a keyboard. That is a surprisingly modern set of instincts.

It also reminds us that innovation is rarely as clean as the product launches make it look. The machines that change the world usually stand on a pile of earlier attempts: prototypes, trials, strange devices, expensive experiments and machines that looked brilliant in a lab but awkward in a living room.

NewsPAD belongs in that pile, and quite high up it. It was not a consumer hit because it was not built to be one. But as a demonstration of where portable media computing could go, it was impressively clear-eyed.

The Acorn twist

There is also a particularly Acorn flavour to the whole story. Acorn often seemed capable of producing clever technology that pointed beyond its commercial reach. The company had engineering talent, strong ideas and a habit of being early in ways that later made historians sigh.

With NewsPAD, that pattern appears again. The concept was smart. The hardware was credible. The direction of travel was correct. But the market that might have rewarded such a device did not yet exist.

That is not a simple tragedy. It is just how technology often works. Being early sounds glamorous until you realise it mostly means paying full price for problems later companies get to solve cheaply.

NewsPAD showed what could be done, and then the industry moved on. Years later, tablets finally became normal. By then, the Acorn machine had become a ghost: remembered by enthusiasts, museum visitors and people who enjoy pointing at old hardware and saying, with some justification, that the idea was already there.

The lesson from the ghost tablet

The NewsPAD story is useful because it pushes back against a lazy version of technology history where everything important begins with the product that sells millions. Mass-market success matters, but it is not the same as invention. Before a category becomes obvious, someone usually has to build an awkward version of it.

NewsPAD was that kind of machine. It was bulky, limited and too early, but it was not confused. It knew what it wanted to be: a portable screen for a new kind of newspaper. It imagined readers using digital content in a more personal and media-rich way. It treated the tablet as a relaxed information device rather than a shrunken workstation. That was a good instinct. It just arrived before the supporting technology had caught up.
