
The Windows handheld market has become one of the most competitive corners of PC gaming, and Intel has just made it a lot harder to ignore. With the Arc G3 Extreme and its Arc B390 integrated graphics, the company is no longer simply trying to catch AMD in portable gaming performance. It is now beating AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme in a series of important gaming benchmarks, and in some cases by margins large enough to reshape the conversation around premium handheld PCs. At 35 watts, Intel’s new platform shows a clear performance advantage over the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. Several modern games run more than 50 percent faster on the Arc G3 Extreme, while the average lead across the tested titles sits at roughly 41 percent. In a market where every frame matters and where compact devices often live on the edge of playable performance, that is not a small technical win. It is a direct challenge to AMD’s position as the default choice for high-end Windows handhelds.
The Arc G3 Extreme is built around the GPU
The Intel Arc G3 Extreme is based on the Panther Lake platform and uses the Arc B390 integrated GPU. That graphics unit is the critical part of the story. It features twelve Xe3 graphics cores and is designed to deliver strong gaming performance inside the tight limits of a compact handheld chassis. In this category, the integrated GPU is not a secondary feature. It is the heart of the device.
A Windows handheld has no space for a large discrete GPU, no oversized cooling system and no tolerance for excessive power draw. The iGPU has to do almost everything, from pushing modern game engines to maintaining stable frame pacing at 1080p. That has historically been AMD’s advantage. Its Radeon integrated graphics gave handheld makers a proven route to compact gaming performance, while Intel’s earlier efforts struggled to match the same level of consistency.
This time, Intel appears to have taken a genuine step forward. The Arc B390 does not just close the gap. In several gaming workloads, it opens a lead. At 35 watts, Intel pulls ahead
The clearest performance picture appears at 35 watts. That is a high-power mode for a handheld, but it is also the setting where premium devices are expected to prove themselves. In this range, the Intel-based MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ can stretch its legs against the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme used in the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X.
The results are striking because they focus on native gaming performance. Upscaling and frame generation are excluded, which makes the comparison cleaner. Those technologies can improve perceived smoothness and help stretch performance further, but they also complicate direct hardware comparisons. That is the difference between a game that hovers around the lower edge of playability and one that has enough headroom to feel significantly more fluid.
Cyberpunk 2077 remains a demanding benchmark for compact gaming systems because it stresses both the GPU and memory subsystem. A handheld that can approach 50 fps at demanding settings has more room to absorb busy scenes, effects-heavy moments and open-world traversal without feeling unstable. For Intel, this is exactly the kind of result that changes perception.
Baldur’s Gate 3 tells a similar story. Intel reaches 49.5 fps, while AMD records 32.5 fps. This is not a twitch shooter, but performance still matters. Smooth camera movement, dense environments and large combat encounters all benefit from the extra margin. On a handheld screen, a stable frame rate can often matter more than maximum visual settings, and Intel’s lead gives players more flexibility.
These are not niche titles. They are the sort of games buyers use to judge whether a handheld PC can really replace a laptop for serious portable gaming. Intel winning here gives the Arc G3 Extreme credibility where it counts.
Racing and esports titles widen the gap
F1 24 is one of the most dramatic results in the comparison. Intel reaches 36.5 fps, while the Ryzen Z2 Extreme falls to 17.7 fps. In a racing game, that difference is severe. Low frame rates affect timing, steering precision and overall control. A game that runs below 20 fps is not simply less smooth. It becomes harder to play properly.

That is why this should not be read as the end of AMD’s handheld relevance. The Ryzen Z2 Extreme remains a capable processor, and AMD still has deep experience in integrated graphics. Many handheld makers know its platforms well, and existing software tuning around AMD hardware remains an advantage. But the balance has changed. AMD is no longer competing against an Intel platform that merely wants to participate. It is now facing one that can win.
The price problem cannot be ignored
Performance alone does not settle the buying decision. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ with Intel hardware sits in a much higher price class than the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X. The AMD-based system is positioned around 999 dollars, while the Intel configuration is listed around 1,799 dollars.
That gap is enormous. A 41 percent average performance lead is impressive, but a device costing hundreds more has to justify itself beyond benchmark charts. For many buyers, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme will still make more sense if it delivers acceptable performance at a much lower price.
This is where the Intel Arc G3 Extreme becomes both exciting and complicated. As a technical statement, it is a success. As a value proposition, it depends heavily on the buyer. Someone playing indie games, older PC titles, emulated games or cloud-streamed content may see little reason to pay so much more. Someone who wants demanding AAA games at higher settings on a handheld may view Intel’s extra performance as the entire point.
The handheld market is splitting into tiers. Affordable devices will continue to prioritise efficiency and value. Premium handhelds will push closer to compact gaming laptops. The Arc G3 Extreme clearly belongs in the second category.
Battery life and cooling will decide the full story
The 35-watt results are impressive, but they do not describe the whole handheld experience. A handheld PC is not just a small laptop with built-in controls. It is a device people hold in their hands, use away from a charger and expect to remain comfortable over longer sessions.
At 35 watts, battery life will drop quickly. Fan noise will rise, chassis temperatures will matter and sustained performance will depend heavily on cooling design. These are not secondary details. They often decide whether a powerful handheld is enjoyable in daily use or simply impressive in short benchmark runs.
The more practical range for many players is likely between 15 and 25 watts. That is where battery life, heat and noise become easier to manage. Intel’s challenge is to show that the Arc G3 Extreme is not only fast at its highest performance setting, but also efficient when power is limited.
There is reason to think the extra headroom could help. If Intel can run a game faster at 35 watts, it may also be able to maintain a capped 40 fps or 45 fps at a lower power level in some titles. That would make the chip useful not only for maximum performance, but also for smoother, quieter and more efficient profiles. The final answer will depend on retail tuning, firmware, drivers and the design choices made by each manufacturer.
Why this matters for the next generation of handheld PCs
Intel’s result puts new pressure on AMD’s handheld roadmap. For several years, AMD has had the stronger story in compact gaming APUs. Its chips powered many of the most prominent Windows handhelds and became the safer choice for manufacturers that wanted reliable gaming performance.
The Arc G3 Extreme changes that calculation. It gives Intel a credible premium option and gives device makers another route to high-performance handheld designs. That could lead to more variety, sharper competition and faster innovation across the category.
It also raises expectations for AMD. The Ryzen Z2 Extreme is still competitive, but the next generation will need to do more than offer modest improvements. AMD will need stronger graphics performance, better efficiency or a more compelling price-performance balance to maintain its position.
For gamers, this is good news. Real competition usually improves hardware faster than a one-company lead. If Intel and AMD both push harder, future handhelds should become faster, more efficient and more varied.
Intel wins the benchmark round, but the market is still open

For raw handheld gaming performance, Intel has delivered its most convincing argument yet.
But the best benchmark result does not automatically make the best handheld. Price, battery life, cooling, ergonomics, screen quality, software and long-term driver support remain essential. The Intel-based MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ looks powerful, but its high price narrows its audience. The AMD-based alternative may still be the smarter buy for players who want strong performance without stepping into luxury pricing.
Still, the bigger story is hard to miss. Intel has arrived in premium handheld gaming with a chip that can no longer be dismissed. AMD remains a major force, but it no longer owns the performance conversation.
