
The Sega Dreamcast was always more computer than people gave it credit for. Yes, it was a games console. A brilliant one. But under that small white shell sat a machine with a 200 MHz SH-4 processor, PowerVR graphics, modem support, VGA output, keyboard and mouse options, and a link to Windows CE that most players barely noticed. For years, that Windows CE connection was little more than a logo on a loading screen. Now it’s becoming something far more visible. A new Windows CE desktop project is turning the Dreamcast into a small, working desktop machine. Not a modern PC. Not even close. But that’s not the point. The interesting part is watching a console from 1998 act like a compact embedded computer, with windows, a taskbar, file browsing, basic apps, process management and early networking tools. That’s a big shift. For once, Windows CE on Dreamcast isn’t hiding behind a game. It’s the main event.
The Windows CE side of Dreamcast was always unusual
Most Dreamcast owners never had to think about Windows CE. They put in a disc, saw a logo on some games, and moved on. That made sense. The console didn’t boot into a Windows desktop. It didn’t ask you to manage files. It didn’t behave like a PC in the living room. But Windows CE still mattered.
For developers, it offered a familiar route into Dreamcast software. Instead of working only with Sega’s own tools, developers could use a system that felt closer to Windows programming. Don’t expect a daily-use computer
The project still sits firmly in experimental territory. Running it takes technical confidence. You need the right setup, the right image workflow and a willingness to deal with rough edges.
