
The Prológica CP-400 looks familiar at first glance. And it should. It was Brazil’s answer to the TRS-80 Color Computer 2, better known to many as the CoCo. But calling it only a clone misses the point. The CP-400 came from a very specific market, at a very specific time, when importing a computer into Brazil wasn’t simple, cheap or realistic for most buyers. So Prológica did what many Brazilian computer makers did in the 1980s. It took a proven idea, adapted it for local use, and sold it as a machine Brazilian families, students and small businesses could actually buy. That’s what makes the CP-400 interesting. It wasn’t trying to be exotic. It wasn’t chasing luxury. It aimed to put colour home computing in front of people who wanted to learn BASIC, play games, load programs from cassette and explore what a microcomputer could do. And for a while, it did that job well.
The TRS-80 Color Computer connection
The CP-400 followed the design of the TRS-80 Color Computer 2 closely. That gave it a strong starting point. Instead of building a brand-new platform from zero, Prológica worked with an architecture that already had software, documentation habits and a known user experience behind it. That mattered. A home computer without software could feel like an expensive keyboard attached to a television. Compatibility gave the CP-400 a better chance.
At the heart of the machine sat the Motorola 6809E processor. It ran at just under 1 MHz, which doesn’t sound impressive now. Back then, clock speed didn’t tell the whole story. The 6809E had a clean design and a capable instruction set, which made it a favourite among programmers who liked squeezing serious work out of 8-bit hardware.
The CP-400 usually came with 16 KB or 64 KB of RAM, depending on the model. It also included Color BASIC in ROM. Turn it on and the machine dropped you straight into BASIC, ready for commands. No desktop. No icons. No loading screen. Just a prompt and a blinking cursor. That directness defined home computing in the early 1980s.
BASIC at the centre of the experience
The CP-400 was a programming machine before anything else. Yes, people used it for games. Yes, it could run commercial software. But the real daily experience often started with typing. You entered commands, saved programs to cassette, made mistakes, fixed lines and tried again.
Color BASIC gave users a simple way into the machine. You could draw on screen, make sounds, create small games and automate simple tasks. It didn’t hide the computer from you. It made you work with it.
That’s one reason machines like the CP-400 mattered. They didn’t just run software. They invited users to understand how software worked. Sometimes that meant fun. Sometimes it meant frustration. Often it meant both within the same afternoon.
Graphics that made sense for the time
The CP-400 used the Motorola MC6847 video display generator, a familiar chip from the Color Computer family. It gave the machine colour graphics, text display and a handful of modes suited to games, educational programs and experiments.
The standard text mode used 32 columns by 16 lines. That feels cramped now, especially for anyone used to modern displays. But on a living-room television in the 1980s, it made sense. The machine had to work with the screens people already owned.
Graphics modes ranged from chunky, colourful screens to sharper two-colour output. The hardware had limits, and programmers had to work around them. That was normal. Every 8-bit computer came with compromises. The interesting part was seeing what developers could do inside those limits.
The CP-400 also needed to fit Brazil’s television system. Support for PAL-M video made it practical in local homes. RGB output helped users who wanted a clearer picture on a monitor. That small detail says a lot about the machine. Prológica wasn’t just copying a foreign computer. It had to make the design work in Brazil.
Sound was simple, but usable
The CP-400 didn’t have the kind of sound hardware that later made MSX computers feel more polished for games. Its audio was basic. That didn’t make it silent or dull. It could still produce sound effects and simple tones. But music and richer audio demanded clever programming and patience. Developers had to make a little hardware go a long way.
That was typical for the platform. The CP-400 could entertain, but it didn’t pretend to be an arcade machine. It sat in that early home computer space where programming, games, education and experimentation all shared the same keyboard.
The keyboard told the story
The first CP-400 Color had a look you didn’t forget. Its case was compact, and its colourful chiclet-style keyboard gave it a very domestic feel. It looked approachable. Maybe too approachable.
For short commands, the keyboard did the job. For longer programming sessions, it could get annoying fast. Anyone who spent time typing BASIC listings from magazines would understand the problem. Small keys slow you down. They also make errors easier. Prológica clearly understood that.
The CP-400 Color II moved to a more conventional keyboard with larger plastic keys. That changed the feel of the machine. It no longer seemed quite so toy-like. It became easier to imagine using it for longer sessions, not just quick experiments. That upgrade mattered more than a spec sheet suggests. A computer’s keyboard is the part you touch all the time. If it gets in the way, the whole machine feels worse.
Cassette first, floppy if you could afford it
Most CP-400 users started with cassette storage. That was normal for home computers of the period. Cassette recorders were cheap, easy to find and already familiar. They also made loading software slow. Sometimes painfully slow. You’d press play, listen to the data noise, wait, and hope the program loaded without an error. It wasn’t elegant. But it worked.
For users with more money, floppy disk systems changed the machine completely. Programs loaded faster. Files became easier to manage. Development felt less fragile. A CP-400 with disk storage was a much more practical computer.
The machine also supported joysticks, serial connections, cassette input and output, and cartridge expansion. The cartridge slot was especially useful. It allowed instant-loading software and hardware add-ons, which gave the CP-400 more flexibility than a cassette-only setup.
A computer shaped by Brazil’s market
The CP-400 came from Brazil’s market reserve era, when local computer production played a huge role. Import rules made foreign machines difficult to access, so Brazilian companies built domestic alternatives.
That created a very different computer scene from the one in the United States, Japan or Western Europe. Brazilian buyers often saw local versions of international designs. Some followed Apple II ideas. Some followed Sinclair designs. Others, like the CP-400, came from the TRS-80 Color Computer line.
Prológica was one of the major names in that scene. With the CP-400, it offered a machine that felt familiar enough to be useful and local enough to sell. That balance was the point. The CP-400 wasn’t just a technical copy. It was a commercial answer to a real problem: how do you bring colour home computing to a protected market where direct imports don’t work for most people?
The MSX challenge
The CP-400 didn’t have the field to itself for long. By the mid-1980s, MSX machines started gaining attention in Brazil. They offered a more standard platform, stronger graphics, better sound and a clearer consumer identity. For games especially, MSX looked fresh.
That put pressure on the CP-400. Its 6809E processor still had technical strengths, but buyers didn’t always shop by CPU architecture. They looked at games, graphics, price, availability and what friends or schools were using. Against MSX, the CP-400 began to feel older. Not useless. Just older.
This happened quickly across the 8-bit world. A machine could seem exciting one year and dated the next. The CP-400 belonged to that fast-moving period before IBM PC compatibility took over so much of the market.
Why the CP-400 still deserves attention
The Prológica CP-400 deserves attention because it shows how personal computing spread outside the usual American, Japanese and European stories. It brought the TRS-80 Color Computer 2 concept into Brazil with local changes, local manufacturing and local retail logic. It gave users colour graphics, BASIC, cartridge support, cassette loading, expansion options and a path into programming.
It wasn’t the most advanced 8-bit computer of its time. It didn’t need to be. Its job was simpler and more practical: make a capable colour computer available in Brazil under the conditions of the 1980s market. That’s why the CP-400 still stands out. It was a clone, yes. But it was also a Brazilian product with its own context, its own compromises and its own place in the country’s home computer boom.
