Retroid gives Pocket 5 and Pocket Flip 2 a free 12GB RAM boost

Existing customers don’t need to do anything

Retroid has sold through its remaining stock of the 8GB/128GB Pocket 5 and Pocket Flip 2. Rather than hold orders until another batch becomes available, the company will ship a 12GB/128GB model to affected customers. There’s no form to complete. No upgrade fee. No need to cancel and reorder.

The additional 4GB of RAM will be applied automatically to unfulfilled purchases. New customers who order before the changeover date should also receive the upgraded model at the current price.

The Pocket 5 currently costs $199, down from its usual $219 price. The Pocket Flip 2 sits at $209 instead of $229. European customers will still need to account for delivery costs, VAT and possible import fees, so the amount shown at checkout might not be the final figure.

From 15 July, the 12GB versions will become the regular models. Retroid will then increase the listed price by $10. That’s still a fairly small premium for an extra 4GB, especially when you look at what’s happening across the wider memory market.

The hardware hasn’t changed anywhere else

Let’s be clear about what this upgrade does. The Pocket 5 and Pocket Flip 2 aren’t suddenly becoming next-generation handhelds. They still use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 processor and Adreno 650 graphics. Both models also include 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage, a microSD card slot and a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels.

The screen runs at 60Hz. You also get active cooling, a 5,000mAh battery, analogue triggers, Hall-effect sticks, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 and Android 13. The biggest difference between the two machines remains their design. The Pocket 5 uses a standard horizontal layout, while the Pocket Flip 2 folds shut like a classic clamshell handheld. Internally, though, they’re closely related.

Adding more RAM won’t make the Snapdragon 865 process instructions faster. It won’t give the Adreno 650 extra graphics power either. If a game struggles because the processor or GPU can’t keep up, 12GB of memory won’t fix that.

Most older console emulators already run comfortably on 8GB. Systems from the 8-bit, 16-bit and early 3D eras don’t need huge amounts of memory, so players focused on those platforms probably won’t notice much difference. That doesn’t make the upgrade pointless.

Where the extra RAM actually helps

More memory gives Android room to breathe. It can keep more apps open, hold larger texture caches and reduce the chance of the operating system closing software in the background. This matters when you’re switching between an emulator, a game launcher, a browser and other tools. It also helps with demanding Android games and experimental software that pushes the handheld beyond straightforward emulation.

Windows compatibility tools running on Android are a good example. These applications can use a lot of memory, especially when loading PC games with large assets. The processor will still set the overall performance ceiling, but the extra RAM can prevent memory shortages from becoming another problem.

The same applies to newer emulators. Some are still evolving quickly, and their memory requirements can change as compatibility improves. A 12GB device gives developers and users more breathing space than an 8GB model.

It also makes sense for anyone planning to keep the handheld for several years. Apps get larger. Operating systems grow. Background services ask for more resources. That’s how software works. You might not see an immediate frame-rate boost, but extra memory can make the device feel less restricted over time.

The RAM crisis is hitting consumer electronics

Retroid’s upgrade lands at an odd moment because the memory industry is under heavy pressure. Artificial-intelligence data centres are consuming huge quantities of advanced memory. The most powerful AI accelerators depend on high-bandwidth memory, often called HBM, to move large amounts of data quickly between memory and the processor.

HBM brings in far more money than the memory used in affordable handhelds, laptops and smartphones. Memory manufacturers know this. They’re directing production capacity and investment towards the parts that deliver the highest returns. That shift affects the rest of the market.

The LPDDR4X memory used in a gaming handheld isn’t the same as HBM fitted beside an AI accelerator. Still, both products depend on the same broad semiconductor industry. They compete for factory investment, packaging resources, engineering attention and production planning. When suppliers focus on expensive server components, conventional DRAM can become harder to source. Prices rise. Smaller customers feel the squeeze first.

Industry forecasts suggest conventional DRAM contract prices could rise by another 13 to 18 per cent during the third quarter of 2026. NAND flash prices may increase by 10 to 15 per cent over the same period. Those figures affect far more than gaming handhelds. They can influence the cost of laptops, desktop PCs, graphics cards, smartphones, SSDs and game consoles.

The pace of the increases may slow later, but that doesn’t mean prices will fall quickly. Memory factories cost billions to build, and companies can’t add new production lines overnight. Even after construction finishes, manufacturers need time to test and qualify the equipment. Supply could remain tight well beyond 2027.

Smaller handheld brands have fewer options

Large electronics companies buy components in enormous quantities. That gives them bargaining power and often allows them to secure long-term supply agreements. Smaller handheld makers don’t have that advantage.

A modest increase in the price of RAM or storage can wipe out much of the profit on a $200 device. These companies then face an unpleasant choice: raise prices, reduce specifications, delay production or stop selling a particular model.

We’ve already seen all four approaches across the handheld market. Some manufacturers have removed cheaper configurations. Others have introduced revised models with less storage or higher prices.

Retroid’s decision suggests that 12GB modules may currently be easier for the company to obtain than the 8GB parts originally planned. That might sound strange, but supply chains don’t always follow a simple cheaper-means-easier pattern. A specific component can disappear from distributors while a higher-capacity version remains available. Whatever happened behind the scenes, customers come out ahead. They ordered one specification and will receive a better one.

A useful upgrade, not a performance revolution

The extra RAM won’t transform the Pocket 5 or Pocket Flip 2 into high-end gaming PCs. The Snapdragon 865 remains an older mobile processor, and buyers looking for much stronger emulation performance will need newer hardware. Still, 12GB makes both systems more flexible.

It gives demanding Android games more space, supports heavier multitasking and suits users who experiment with PC compatibility software. It should also help the handhelds cope with growing software requirements over the next few years.

Existing customers get the best part of the deal. They’ll receive the upgrade for free. New buyers also have a short window to order the 12GB model before the $10 price increase takes effect. Memory shortages normally mean paying more and getting less. Retroid has managed the opposite, at least for now.
