Sharp SF1 TV explained: the Super Famicom built into a television

At first glance, the Sharp SF1 looks like someone pushed a Super Famicom into the top of a television and decided to sell the result. That’s not far from the truth, but it also sells the machine short. Released in Japan in December 1990, the SF1 combined a colour CRT television with fully integrated Super Famicom hardware. The cartridge slot sat above the screen. Two controller ports appeared on the front. The console circuitry lived inside the television itself, connected directly to the display. There was no separate console box. No video cable hanging behind the cabinet. No extra power adaptor taking up another socket. You inserted a cartridge, connected a controller and started playing. It sounds simple now, but in 1990 that level of integration was unusual. Televisions, games consoles and video recorders generally existed as separate products, each with its own cables, controls and design language. Sharp treated the television and console as a single machine instead. The SF1 wasn’t just tidy. It also delivered a cleaner video signal than many standard Super Famicom setups.

Sharp offered two versions

Sharp sold the SF1 in two screen sizes. The smaller 14G-SF1 came with a 14-inch display and cost ¥100,000 before tax. The larger 21G-SF1 used a 21-inch screen and carried a price of ¥133,000 before tax. Neither version was cheap.

A buyer wasn’t simply paying for a Super Famicom with a screen attached. The price covered a complete Sharp television, licensed Nintendo hardware, a custom cabinet and the internal electronics needed to connect everything properly.

The 14-inch model made sense for a bedroom, study or compact flat. The 21-inch version could serve as the main television in a smaller household. Both used the same general design, with a dark grey cabinet, a cartridge slot above the tube and controller connections below it.

Sharp didn’t try to hide the gaming hardware behind a decorative panel. The cartridge slot was right there on top, clearly visible. It became part of the television’s identity. That choice made the SF1 easy to recognise. Even switched off, it didn’t look like an ordinary CRT set.

It removed most of the setup

A standard Super Famicom needed its own power adaptor and a cable running to the television. Depending on the television and connection, the owner might also need to change channels or select the correct input before playing. The SF1 stripped away much of that routine.

The console hardware was already inside the set, so there was no external video connection between the two devices. That meant fewer cables and less clutter around the television. Owners still needed wired controllers, of course, but the basic installation was much cleaner. This mattered more than it might sound.

Home entertainment cabinets in the early 1990s could become crowded quickly. Add a console, a video recorder and perhaps a stereo system, and the area behind the television turned into a knot of mains leads and signal cables. The SF1 removed one whole box from that arrangement. It also made the console feel like another television function rather than a separate machine.

The picture was one of its strongest features

The main technical advantage of the SF1 came from its internal video connection. Sharp connected the Super Famicom hardware to the display using separated luminance and colour signals, similar to an S-Video connection. That produced a cleaner picture than the composite video setup many players used with ordinary televisions.

The SF1 didn’t increase the console’s resolution. It didn’t improve the graphics processor. It simply carried the image to the screen with less signal degradation. On a CRT, that could make a clear difference. Text looked more defined. Character outlines appeared sharper. Colour edges showed less bleeding. Fine details in backgrounds and menus were easier to see.

Super Famicom games often relied on detailed pixel art, small interface elements and carefully separated colour palettes. A poor composite connection could soften those details. The SF1’s internal signal path helped keep them intact.

That gave Sharp an advantage most television manufacturers couldn’t easily match. The company controlled the entire chain, from the console board to the display electronics. There was no third-party cable or external input adding interference along the way. For anyone used to playing through a weak composite signal, the difference could be noticeable straight away.

The console felt built into the television

The SF1’s cartridge slot sat above the screen and accepted standard Japanese Super Famicom games. Players inserted cartridges vertically, much as they would on the original console. Sharp also included console functions on the television remote control. A button combination allowed the user to reset a game without walking over to the set. That sounds like a small touch. It wasn’t.

Resetting a console from the sofa felt unusually convenient at a time when most gaming controls remained physically attached to the hardware. Sharp clearly wanted the Super Famicom section to behave like a proper television feature, not an extra component hidden inside the case.

The internal console assembly also worked as a serviceable module. Sharp built the SF1 around licensed Nintendo technology, but it didn’t simply place a retail Super Famicom inside a television shell. The electronics formed part of the set’s overall design. That distinction matters. The SF1 was a purpose-built product, not a modified television.

Expansion came with limits

Integration made the SF1 cleaner, but it also made the system less flexible. A standard Super Famicom sat on a shelf with accessible ports and enough space around it for accessories. The SF1 placed the console hardware inside a fixed cabinet, so certain peripherals could be awkward to connect.

Accessories designed to sit beneath the console or attach around its body didn’t always fit the SF1’s layout. The television cabinet decided how much physical space was available. That’s the usual trade-off with all-in-one hardware.

You gain simplicity, but you lose some freedom. A separate console can move to another television, accept unusual accessories and be replaced without affecting the display. The SF1 tied the screen and games hardware together. For ordinary cartridge gaming, that wasn’t a major problem. For owners interested in expansion hardware, it could become one.

The sound didn’t match the picture

The SF1’s biggest weakness was audio. Despite its high price and carefully integrated video hardware, the television used mono sound. That was a disappointing choice because the Super Famicom had an impressive audio system for its time. Its games could produce sampled instruments, layered music, atmospheric effects and clear stereo separation. On the SF1, the built-in speaker couldn’t present that full stereo mix. The result was an odd imbalance.

Sharp gave buyers a cleaner picture than many normal setups, but it paired that picture with limited sound. For a premium all-in-one product, stereo speakers would’ve made far more sense. The decision probably reflected the television market of the period. Many compact CRT sets still shipped with a single speaker, and stereo television sound wasn’t standard across every model. Even so, the omission is hard to ignore. The SF1 looked like a high-end answer to the home console setup, yet it compromised one of the Super Famicom’s strongest features.

This was never the budget option

The SF1 launched only weeks after the Super Famicom arrived in Japan, placing it right at the start of Nintendo’s 16-bit era. That timing gave Sharp a fresh and desirable platform to build around, but the price narrowed the audience. The smaller model cost ¥100,000 before tax. The larger version cost ¥133,000. A normal Super Famicom was far cheaper, especially for anyone who already owned a suitable television.

So the SF1 didn’t compete as a low-cost bundle. It made more sense for someone planning to buy a new television anyway and willing to pay extra for an integrated games system. The buyer got a cleaner installation, a strong internal video connection and a single remote-controlled unit. Everyone else could buy the console separately and keep more money in their pocket.

Sharp had already experimented with televisions containing Famicom hardware, so the SF1 wasn’t a one-off idea. The company clearly believed that gaming could become a built-in television feature, just like a tuner or external video input. The problem was product life. A television could stay in use for many years. A console belonged to a specific generation. Once newer hardware arrived, the television remained useful, but the built-in gaming system started to feel dated.

A clever machine with obvious compromises

The Sharp SF1 still stands out because its basic idea remains familiar. Modern manufacturers continue to combine functions, reduce cables and build software or gaming services directly into displays. The technology has changed, but the sales pitch hasn’t. People like fewer boxes. They like quicker access. They like hardware that works without a complicated setup. The SF1 offered all of that in 1990.

It also showed the downside. Integrated products can be harder to upgrade, repair or expand. When one section becomes obsolete, the rest of the machine has to live with it. Sharp didn’t create the perfect television or the perfect Super Famicom. The mono sound was a clear miss. The high price limited its appeal. The fixed cabinet made some accessories impractical. Still, the company built something more thoughtful than a gimmick.

The SF1 delivered a cleaner picture, reduced cable clutter and made console gaming feel like a built-in part of the television. Its cartridge slot grabbed attention, but the engineering behind the screen mattered more. Sharp designed the display and console to work as one system. For a brief moment at the start of the 16-bit era, that made the SF1 one of the most unusual ways to play Super Famicom games.
